The Philippine Army and Philippine Navy are strengthening coordination in Sulu as both services seek closer cooperation in addressing security concerns across the province’s land and maritime areas.
The move followed a meeting between Brigadier General Alaric Avelino Delos Santos, commander of the 1102nd Infantry Brigade (1102Bde), and Commander Jeffry Reyes, commanding officer of BRP Tausug, at the brigade headquarters in Bual village, Luuk, Sulu on September 18, 2026.
The meeting focused on the prevailing security situation in Sulu and ways to improve interoperability, coordination and information-sharing between Army units operating on the ground and Navy forces securing surrounding waters.
Reyes was accompanied by Ensign Jonathan Alvior Jr. during the visit. They were received by Delos Santos together with other senior officers from the 1102nd Infantry Brigade.
Army officials emphasized that closer coordination between the two services is important in protecting communities, responding to security concerns and sustaining gains made toward peace and stability in Sulu.
Delos Santos said security responsibilities extend beyond individual military services, with Army and Navy units able to complement each other through stronger communication and coordinated operations.
The engagement concluded with both sides reaffirming their commitment to sustained cooperation and improved joint security efforts.
The strengthened Army-Navy coordination comes as security operations in Sulu continue to involve both land and maritime areas, making information-sharing and inter-service cooperation an important part of maintaining stability in the province.
