HONG KONG — Tam Mei-kam, the mother of late Cantopop legend Anita Mui, has died at the age of 102 after collapsing while eating at her home in Causeway Bay on Sunday, August 30.
According to multiple Hong Kong media reports, emergency services were called to a residence on Leighton Road after Tam became unconscious during a meal. She was rushed to Ruttonjee Hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.
Early reports, including one cited by AsiaOne, said the elderly woman may have choked while eating. However, other reports from Hong Kong broadcasters and public media said the exact cause of death has yet to be officially determined, with further investigation and medical examination expected. Authorities reportedly found no suspicious injuries or circumstances at the residence.
A Quiet Final Chapter for Anita Mui’s Mother
Tam, affectionately known to many fans as “Mui Ma,” had largely stayed out of the public spotlight in recent years. According to AsiaOne, she was rarely seen publicly after reaching her centenary milestone and was last reportedly featured in a Lunar New Year greeting shared by Anita Mui’s international fan club earlier this year.
Reports from RTHK and the South China Morning Post said Tam had underlying health conditions and required regular medication and a liquid diet. She reportedly collapsed while being fed liquid food by her domestic helper, who immediately sought emergency assistance.

On Sunday, reports said Peter was shocked when contacted by the media about his mother’s death, claiming he had been out of contact with relatives. He later arrived at Ruttonjee Hospital. Some regional media also reported that he expressed anger over not being informed earlier, underscoring the painful family divisions that had persisted for years.
