KELANTAN, MALAYSIA — A Malaysian grandmother unexpectedly became a midwife when her daughter went into labour during a car ride to the hospital, helping deliver her newborn grandson with knowledge she had picked up from watching TikTok videos.
The dramatic birth took place early on Saturday, Sept 5, as 28-year-old Nuraisyah Fauzi was being driven to KPJ Perdana Specialist Hospital in Kota Baru, Kelantan.
However, the family did not make it to the hospital in time.
Nuraisyah gave birth to a baby boy at about 1.55am inside the moving multi-purpose vehicle.
Baby’s head crowned during journey
The family had left from Rantau Panjang after Nuraisyah began experiencing contractions earlier in the night.
According to her husband, Siraj Yasman, they began travelling to the hospital at about 1.40am.
Just 15 minutes into the journey, Nuraisyah told her husband that her clothes were wet and that the baby’s head had already crowned.
With no time to waste, her mother, Rosminie Che Yusoff, immediately stepped in to help deliver the baby.
Grandmother relied on TikTok videos
Rosminie had no professional experience as a midwife.
However, Siraj said his mother-in-law had previously watched videos on TikTok showing childbirth techniques.
Drawing on what she had seen online, she tried to assist her daughter through the emergency delivery.
Siraj admitted that he panicked during the ordeal and could do little except pray while his mother-in-law helped bring the baby into the world.
Sixth child born before reaching hospital
The remarkable moment was filmed by Nuraisyah’s 27-year-old sister, Siti Hajar Tajuddin, who was also inside the vehicle.
After the baby was delivered, the family continued to the hospital, with Siraj holding his newborn son during the journey.
Hospital staff were reportedly already on standby when the family arrived.
Both Nuraisyah and her baby boy were reported to be in good health. The newborn, the couple’s sixth child, had not yet been named at the time of the report.
Video goes viral
Siraj later shared footage of the extraordinary experience on TikTok.
The video quickly attracted widespread attention, receiving more than 4.4 million views by Wednesday morning.
