HUA HIN — The Hua Hin Provincial Court has sentenced a man to death for the robbery and murder of a hotel receptionist, ruling that the brutality of the crime left no grounds for a reduced sentence despite his confession.
The court delivered its ruling on Sept 8 in the case involving the killing of Wirin “Nui” Thaolipo, 35, a receptionist at a hotel in Hua Hin, Prachuap Khiri Khan.
The defendant, Rattikorn Yingyod, also known as Sam, 36, was found guilty over the fatal attack, which took place in the early hours of Jan 19.
Receptionist attacked while on duty
The killing occurred at around 3.15am at a hotel in Hua Hin.
According to reports, CCTV footage showed the attacker entering the hotel and attacking Wirin behind the reception counter with an iron bar.
The attacker then fled with the victim’s belongings, including two mobile phones and a bag.
Wirin suffered severe head injuries and was later pronounced dead.
Suspect arrested after police manhunt
Police launched a major search following the killing.
The suspect was arrested the following day near railway tracks in Hua Hin after investigators tracked him down.
Authorities also recovered evidence connected to the attack during their investigation.
The case quickly drew widespread attention because of the violent nature of the crime and the CCTV footage that became a key part of the investigation.
Court rejects sentence reduction despite confession
During the court proceedings, the defendant confessed to the crime.
However, the Hua Hin Provincial Court ruled that the circumstances of the case were particularly serious and brutal.
The court found no sufficient reason to reduce the punishment despite the confession.
It therefore imposed the death penalty.
Thai reports said the court considered the crime severe and shocking, noting the devastating impact on the victim’s family.
Victim’s mother attends ruling
Wirin’s mother attended the court hearing and said she felt the ruling delivered justice for her daughter.
However, the case is not necessarily over.
The ruling was issued by the court of first instance, meaning further legal proceedings may still be available under Thailand’s judicial process.
A case that shocked Hua Hin
The murder sent shockwaves through Hua Hin, one of Thailand’s best-known tourist destinations.
The victim was attacked while working at the hotel reception desk during the early hours of the morning.
The case also raised concerns about safety for workers who work alone during overnight shifts.
Police moved quickly to identify and arrest a suspect, while the subsequent court case remained closely watched by the victim’s family and local community.
