MANILA, Philippines — Actor and comedian Archie Alemania has spoken publicly about the marital problems that he says contributed to his separation from actress Gee Canlas, offering his side months after Canlas confirmed that she was the one who left their marriage.
In a recent interview with Ogie Diaz, Alemania described years of conflict in their relationship, including disagreements over their roles as husband and wife, household decisions, and how they handled confrontations.
Alemania said both he and Canlas are Christians and that his understanding of marriage shaped his expectations of their respective roles.
According to the actor, he believed the husband should lead the household while the wife should submit to her husband. He said the arrangement became a recurring source of conflict because, in his words, they were “both kings in one kingdom.”
He said their disagreements continued for years and eventually affected their relationship.
Alemania says he wanted to leave the marriage several times
Alemania said there were several occasions when he considered leaving the marriage, but claimed Canlas would stop him.
He eventually chose to stay, saying their son, Caleb, was a major reason.
The actor also described a period when the couple continued living under the same roof but became emotionally distant. He said he stopped involving himself in major household decisions and instead allowed Canlas to make them.
As an example, Alemania recalled wanting to move out of Canlas’ family home after they had lived there for about five years. He said the move did not happen because Canlas and her parents opposed the idea.
Rather than continue fighting, he said he chose to protect his peace.
He also addressed Canlas’ earlier comments about their separation
Canlas confirmed their separation during a March 3 interview on “Fast Talk with Boy Abunda.”
At the time, she said the decision was not mutual and made clear that she was the one who left the marriage.
Canlas described the decision as extremely difficult and said it was not caused by one isolated incident. Instead, she said various issues accumulated over time and eventually contributed to the breakdown of their marriage.
She also said she had tried to keep her family together and later expressed regret that she had not left earlier.
Alemania, in his latest interview, agreed that Canlas should have left earlier if doing so brought peace to both of them.
Alemania describes confrontations and admits to violent behavior
The actor also discussed heated confrontations between the couple.
Alemania claimed that he would sometimes walk away from arguments because he did not want the situation to escalate. He alleged, however, that Canlas would continue provoking him until he reacted.
Importantly, these statements are Alemania’s account of the relationship and should not be treated as independently established facts.
During the interview, Alemania also acknowledged an incident in which he struck Canlas with a bottle or tumbler during an argument.
He said that if they had remained together, he feared the situation could have become worse.
The disclosure adds a serious dimension to the couple’s separation, particularly as both have publicly described the marriage as having become increasingly difficult.
Their son remains at the center of the situation
Alemania also spoke emotionally about his relationship with his son, Caleb.
He claimed that he went months without seeing the child and said that being separated from his son has been one of the most painful aspects of the breakup.
He recalled unexpectedly seeing Caleb at a park and said the two embraced and told each other they missed one another.
Alemania also said he had attempted to contact Canlas by email to arrange a meeting with their son but did not receive a response.
Canlas, meanwhile, previously identified herself publicly as a solo parent and said her priority was creating a stable environment for Caleb.
Where Rita Daniela’s case fits into the story
Alemania’s marital troubles have also unfolded amid his highly publicized legal case involving actress Rita Daniela.
Canlas previously addressed the issue directly during her March interview and said she did not consider the case the single reason for their separation. Instead, she described the breakdown of the marriage as the result of multiple issues accumulating over time.
The legal case itself resulted in a conviction.
In October 2025, the Bacoor Municipal Trial Court in Cities Branch 2 found Alemania guilty of acts of lasciviousness in the case filed by Daniela. The court imposed an indeterminate prison sentence of one month and one day to one year and one day and ordered him to pay ₱20,000 each in civil indemnity and moral damages, with interest under the terms of the ruling.
The case stemmed from allegations involving an encounter after a September 2024 gathering. Alemania had pleaded not guilty during the proceedings.
It is important to distinguish the legal case from the couple’s marital separation: Canlas herself said the Rita Daniela case was not the sole reason their marriage ended.
A marriage that had already been under strain
The latest revelations give more context to a separation that Canlas first publicly confirmed in March.
Earlier in February, Canlas had described herself as a solo parent while saying she was still healing and trying to move forward for her son. ABS-CBN Entertainment also reported that her “solo parent” post sparked public speculation about the status of her marriage.
By March, Canlas confirmed that she and Alemania were no longer together and said she had ultimately chosen to leave.
Now, Alemania has publicly offered his own perspective on what happened inside their marriage.
While their accounts differ, both have acknowledged that the relationship had reached a point where separation became the path forward.
For Alemania, the latest interview appears to be an attempt to explain his experience of the marriage and the circumstances surrounding their breakup.
For Canlas, her earlier interviews have focused more heavily on healing, rebuilding her life and being present for their son.
The couple’s separation therefore remains a deeply personal matter, with both sides having publicly shared different perspectives on what led to the end of their marriage.
