CATBALOGAN CITY, Samar — A 35-year-old nurse who had just completed a public health mission was killed after a waiting shed suddenly collapsed on him while he was waiting for a boat ride home in Catbalogan City, Samar.
The victim, Kelvin Castro, was a Department of Health nurse assigned to the Catbalogan City Health Office, according to police information reported by the Philippine Daily Inquirer.
Castro and a fellow nurse had reportedly just completed a measles-rubella supplemental immunization activity in Barangay Canhawan Gote on Sierra Island on Thursday afternoon, August 27, when tragedy struck.
After completing their work, the two health workers went to a docking area to wait for a motorboat back to Catbalogan City.
But while Castro was sitting inside a waiting shed, the structure suddenly gave way.
A concrete slab collapsed directly onto the nurse, leaving him with multiple injuries, including serious injuries to his head.
Residents in the area, daycare teachers, and others nearby rushed to help pull Castro from beneath the collapsed structure. He was immediately taken to Samar Provincial Hospital, where medical personnel attempted to revive him. Despite their efforts, Castro was declared dead on arrival.
A Public Health Worker’s Final Mission
The tragedy has drawn attention not only because of the sudden and devastating nature of the accident, but also because Castro was carrying out public service work shortly before his death.
His final known assignment involved helping deliver a measles-rubella immunization activity to a community on Sierra Island—part of the frontline public health work that often requires health personnel to travel to remote and island communities.
The Catbalogan City government identifies the City Health Office as one of its key public service departments, while Barangay Canhawan Gote is officially listed as one of Catbalogan’s rural barangays. These details underscore the logistical challenges faced by health workers serving communities beyond the city center.
Questions Remain Over the Collapse
As of the latest available reports, authorities had not publicly disclosed what caused the waiting shed to collapse or whether the structure had shown signs of damage before the incident.
