SINGAPORE — A man is set to be charged in Singapore over an alleged series of perfume thefts at Changi Airport, with the case adding to a string of recent investigations involving suspected shoplifting at the major aviation hub.
According to The Straits Times, the man is accused of stealing perfume products during a theft spree at the airport. The case is expected to proceed in court, where the allegations will be formally addressed.
The case highlights continuing efforts by Singapore authorities and airport retailers to tackle theft in one of the world’s busiest international travel hubs.
Changi Airport Theft Cases Under Scrutiny
Changi Airport has previously seen several theft investigations involving retail stores.
In one recent case, a traveller was arrested after allegedly stealing a $480 tie clip from a transit-area shop at Terminal 2. Police said the man had already left Singapore when his identity was established, but he was arrested after returning to the country in transit several days later.
Earlier cases have also involved perfume products. In December 2024, two foreigners were arrested over the alleged theft of 10 perfume bottles worth more than S$2,600, while another woman was arrested over alleged theft of perfume bottles and souvenirs valued at more than S$1,100.
Court Proceedings Will Determine the Case
As with any criminal allegation, the accused is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
The upcoming proceedings are expected to establish the details of the alleged thefts, including what was taken, where the incidents occurred and the evidence supporting the charges.
The case also underscores the importance of security measures in airport retail areas, where large numbers of travellers move through shops every day.
With the alleged perfume theft spree now heading toward court, attention will turn to the evidence and what penalties could follow if the accusations are proven.
