Car Crashes Into JEM Carpark Wall, Leaving Large Hole Near Lift Lobby

SINGAPORE — A vehicle crashed into a wall panel at JEM shopping mall’s basement carpark, leaving a large hole near a lift lobby and scattering debris across the floor.

The incident happened on the morning of Oct. 6 at the mall’s second basement level (B2) in Jurong East, according to Lendlease, which owns and manages JEM. No injuries were reported.

Photos of the aftermath circulated on social media, showing a substantial section of the wall apparently smashed through. The damaged area was located near Lift Lobby 1, with parts of the space behind the wall visible through the opening.

Large hole left in basement wall

Images shared online showed broken pieces of plaster and other debris scattered across the carpark floor.

One photograph appeared to show an opening large enough to reveal part of the area behind the wall, including what looked like a travellator. Another image showed the damaged section from a different angle.

The images quickly attracted attention online, with some users joking about whether a vehicle had somehow driven through the wall.

One social-media commenter compared the scene to Juggernaut, the Marvel character known for crashing through obstacles, while another joked that Singapore had gained a “drive-thru mall”.

Other commenters speculated about the vehicle involved, with one object resembling a Mercedes-Benz emblem reportedly spotted among the debris. The vehicle itself was not shown in the widely circulated aftermath photographs.

Lendlease says no one was hurt

Lendlease confirmed that a vehicle had collided with a wall panel near a lift lobby on the second basement level.

The mall operator said no injuries were reported.

Its security and technical teams responded promptly after the incident to secure the affected area. The damaged section was subsequently cordoned off while repair works were carried out.

Lendlease did not disclose what caused the vehicle to collide with the wall.

There has also been no public confirmation of whether the driver lost control, made a driving error or experienced another problem before the crash. The exact circumstances therefore remain unclear.

JEM and carpark remain open

Despite the damage, the incident did not disrupt the mall’s overall operations.

Lendlease said JEM and its carpark remained open as usual, while the affected section was isolated for repairs.

The mall’s response meant that shoppers and motorists could continue using the premises while repair work was carried out.

The incident appears to have been confined to the damaged wall section, with no reported injuries or broader disruption to the shopping centre.

Online reaction focuses on the size of the damage

The unusually large opening in the wall became the main focus of online discussion after photographs were posted on Facebook and other platforms.

A post on the ROADS.sg Facebook page attracted hundreds of reactions and comments, with users coming up with humorous explanations for how the damage could have occurred.

Another social-media post questioned whether the wall was strong enough to withstand such an impact, while others simply expressed surprise at the scale of the damage.

However, the photographs alone do not establish how fast the vehicle was travelling or how the collision occurred.

Investigation and repairs

Lendlease has not publicly provided further details about the vehicle, driver or circumstances surrounding the collision.

AsiaOne reported that it had reached out to Lendlease, the Singapore Police Force and the Building and Construction Authority for further information.

For now, the confirmed facts are that a vehicle struck the wall panel on B2 of JEM on Oct. 6, no injuries were reported, and the affected area was cordoned off for repairs.

The dramatic photographs may have prompted plenty of jokes online, but the incident also highlights the importance of quickly securing damaged structures in busy public spaces.

With the damaged section isolated and repairs underway, JEM continues to operate normally while the circumstances behind the unusual crash remain unclear.
