A 69-year-old driver in Johor Bahru, Malaysia, accidentally pressed the accelerator instead of the brake while reversing, sending his car crashing into two vehicles and eventually into an eatery.
The incident happened on September 29 at Taman Daya after the elderly motorist had finished breakfast and was preparing to leave the area.
According to police, the man was driving a Toyota Camry when he mistakenly stepped on the accelerator while reversing. The sudden acceleration caused the vehicle to move backward and collide with a parked Proton Saga.
Instead of stopping the vehicle, the driver reportedly panicked and pressed the accelerator again. The Toyota Camry then continued moving backward, striking another white Toyota Camry parked nearby.
The impact did not stop the vehicle. The car continued into the premises of an eatery, causing additional damage to the establishment.
The crash damaged both vehicles that were struck as well as parts of the eatery. Despite the multiple collisions, no injuries were reported in the incident.
Police said preliminary investigations indicated that the driver lost control of the vehicle after mistakenly operating the accelerator while attempting to reverse.
The incident highlights the risks associated with pedal errors, particularly in crowded areas where vehicles are parked close to buildings and businesses. A momentary mistake while maneuvering at low speed can result in a chain of collisions when the vehicle suddenly accelerates.
Johor Bahru South police are investigating the case under Section 43(1) of Malaysia’s Road Transport Act 1987, which covers careless and inconsiderate driving.
Authorities have not reported any serious injuries from the incident, while investigations into the exact circumstances surrounding the crash are continuing.
