Several parts of Singapore are expected to experience heavy thundery showers and gusty winds on Thursday afternoon, October 1, as unsettled weather moves across the island.
The Meteorological Service Singapore said moderate to heavy thundery showers accompanied by gusty winds were expected over northern, western and central areas between 2.20pm and 3.10pm.
Weather radar observations around 2.15pm showed rainclouds approaching from the west, supporting the forecast for wet conditions in several areas.
The latest weather alert comes after heavy rain affected parts of Singapore in recent days. Flash floods were reported in Woodlands and Lim Chu Kang on September 30 following intense thundery showers.
The National Environment Agency also said showers were forecast over Singapore and the surrounding region on October 1. However, it warned that smoke haze could still affect the island because of prevailing south-easterly to southerly winds.
Despite the haze risk, air quality remained in the moderate range across all five regions at 2pm on October 1. One-hour PM2.5 readings were also within the normal band at the time of the update.
Residents in areas affected by the rain were advised to be prepared for sudden downpours and strong winds, particularly during the afternoon period covered by the weather alert.
The combination of showers and shifting regional winds means weather conditions may vary significantly across the island, with some areas experiencing rain while others remain relatively dry.
The latest forecast also comes as Singapore continues to monitor regional smoke haze. Although recent showers have helped improve conditions, smoke from southern Sumatra and Kalimantan remains capable of drifting towards Singapore when winds are favourable.
For commuters and residents heading outdoors, keeping an umbrella or rain protection nearby may be useful, especially in northern, western and central Singapore during the afternoon.
