NAGOYA, Japan — South Korea’s women’s sepak takraw team has secured another Asian Games silver medal after Thailand defeated the Korean side in the women’s team-regu final on Friday.
South Korea fell 0–2 to Thailand in regu matches at Mizuho Park Gymnasium in Nagoya, Japan, ending its bid for a first Asian Games gold in the women’s team-regu event.
The result gives South Korea its third consecutive silver medal in the event, following runner-up finishes at the 2018 Jakarta-Palembang Asian Games and the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games.
Thailand Extends Its Dominance
Thailand entered the final as the defending powerhouse of Asian Games sepak takraw and continued its remarkable run in the competition.
The Thai team had already defeated South Korea 3–0 in the preliminary round earlier in the tournament. Thailand then defeated Japan in the semifinals to set up another final against Korea.
The final result means Thailand has now beaten South Korea in the women’s team-regu final at three consecutive Asian Games.
Thailand was also pursuing its fifth straight Asian Games title in the event.
Korea Reached the Final After a Dramatic Semifinal
South Korea’s route to the final included a hard-fought semifinal victory over Indonesia.
Korea won the opening regu 2–0, taking the sets 15–9 and 15–11. Indonesia fought back in the second regu, winning the opening set 15–13, but Korea responded by taking the next two sets 15–13 and 15–11.
That comeback secured a 2–0 semifinal victory and guaranteed Korea at least another silver medal.
Another Silver, But the Gold Remains Elusive
The latest result adds another silver medal to South Korea’s Asian Games sepak takraw record.
South Korea’s only Asian Games gold in sepak takraw came at the 2002 Busan Asian Games, when the men’s team won the circle event. The 2002 victory remains the country’s only gold medal in sepak takraw across men’s and women’s competitions.
The women’s team-regu silver therefore continues a remarkable run of consistency, but the search for a first gold in this particular women’s event goes on.
For South Korea, the journey in Nagoya ends with another podium finish — and another reminder of just how difficult it remains to overcome Thailand at the top of Asian sepak takraw.
Three straight silvers. One familiar rival. And the gold medal still waiting.
