Hong Kong singer G.E.M. was left shaken after a stage lift malfunctioned during her concert in Shenzhen on September 19, briefly leaving her suspended above the stage during a performance.
The incident happened during the fourth Shenzhen show of her I AM GLORIA 2.0 world tour. Videos recorded by concertgoers showed the lift experiencing mechanical problems as it descended, with the platform appearing to jam, move up and down and shake.
G.E.M., whose real name is Gloria Tang Tsz-kei, was seen gripping a handrail as the equipment moved unpredictably. She eventually reached the stage safely and continued performing.
After the incident, the 35-year-old singer told the audience that she was extremely frightened and that her legs were still shaking. She also joked that she felt like she was about to pee on stage because of the scare.
G.E.M. said the lift had been used in more than 90 shows during the tour without a similar problem occurring before. Despite the frightening experience, she said seeing her fans after getting off the lift helped her put the incident behind her.
She later described the unexpected setback as a reminder that life can bring challenges people have never experienced before, adding that such moments can still be faced with a smile.
Reports said the affected stage equipment was inspected following the incident, while the next Shenzhen concert proceeded as scheduled. G.E.M. was not reported to have suffered injuries.
The incident has also prompted discussion among fans about the importance of thorough safety checks for complex stage machinery, particularly during large-scale concerts that use elevated platforms and moving stage structures.
