South Korea — Few names in K-pop have experienced a fall as dramatic as Seungri, the former BIGBANG member whose career went from international stardom to one of South Korea’s most consequential entertainment scandals.
Born Lee Seung-hyun, Seungri rose to fame as a member of BIGBANG, one of the most influential groups of the second generation of K-pop.
But his career came crashing down in 2019 after the Burning Sun scandal triggered a sweeping investigation involving allegations of illegal activities, business connections and corruption surrounding a nightclub in Seoul with which Seungri had been associated.

The Supreme Court’s ruling followed an earlier military-court conviction. A military appeals court had reduced an initial three-year sentence to 18 months, and the Supreme Court subsequently upheld that sentence.
Yonhap reported that the court also found Seungri guilty of arranging illegal sexual services for investors, habitual gambling in Las Vegas, misappropriating money from club funds and other offenses.
The Supreme Court’s decision made the convictions final.
His prison sentence
Seungri was initially sentenced by a military court in August 2021 to three years in prison.
The sentence was later reduced to one year and six months by a military appeals court.
After the Supreme Court upheld the reduced sentence in May 2022, Seungri was transferred from military custody to a civilian correctional facility to serve the remainder of his term.
He was released from prison in February 2023 after completing the sentence.

The Seungri case became bigger than the career of one K-pop star.
