A police officer allegedly shot and killed his teacher wife inside the kindergarten where she worked in eastern Thailand, sending shockwaves through the community and raising fresh concerns about gun violence and school safety.
The shooting happened on September 9 at Nongplalai Municipal Kindergarten in Chonburi province, about 150 kilometers southeast of Bangkok. Authorities confirmed that all 44 children at the school were safely evacuated and no students were physically injured.
According to officials cited by AFP, the suspect, who was identified by other media reports as police officer Tatsapong Tongthat, went to the school and spoke with his wife before allegedly opening fire. The motive behind the killing has not been publicly established.
Children Safely Evacuated
The shooting occurred late Wednesday morning inside the kindergarten complex, triggering an immediate emergency response.
Chonburi provincial authorities said all 44 students were evacuated along with three teachers and other school staff. Officials initially said the children were safe and that they had been quickly taken away from the danger zone.
Authorities also moved to close the kindergarten temporarily while mental health professionals were assigned to provide psychological support to affected students and staff.
Officials emphasized that the children were not the intended targets, and reports indicated that no students witnessed the shooting directly.
Suspect Triggered Massive Police Operation
After the shooting, the suspect allegedly fled from the kindergarten and returned to his home.
Police surrounded the property and began negotiating for his surrender, leading to a tense standoff that lasted approximately 18 hours.
The suspect eventually surrendered to authorities on September 10, according to reports from the Associated Press and Channel NewsAsia.
The investigation into the killing and the possible motive is continuing.
Latest Shooting Raises Alarm Over Thailand’s School Safety
The killing came as Thailand faces renewed scrutiny over gun violence, particularly incidents involving schools and young people.
Just weeks earlier, a deadly shooting involving a 14-year-old student had shaken the country, prompting schools and authorities to reassess security measures. Another teenager was also arrested in a separate school shooting incident earlier in September after firing a gun without causing injuries.
The latest kindergarten shooting has once again intensified debate over whether Thailand’s firearm laws and enforcement measures are strong enough.
Thailand has one of the highest rates of gun ownership in Asia. Following recent shooting incidents, the government has moved to review firearm regulations, including suspending the issuance of new gun permits and reassessing existing licenses.
The country also continues to remember the horrific 2022 nursery massacre in which a former police officer killed dozens of people, including 24 children, in one of Thailand’s deadliest mass killings.
A School Meant to Be Safe
While all 44 children survived the latest incident without physical injuries, the emotional impact on students, teachers and families could continue long after the school reopens.
For many parents, the frightening incident raises a disturbing question: If a deadly domestic dispute can suddenly erupt inside a kindergarten, what more can schools and authorities do to protect children?

The children made it out safely.
