TAIPEI — Taiwan is pushing deeper into indigenous drone propulsion technology as Thunder Tiger Corp. teams up with the National Chung-Shan Institute of Science and Technology (NCSIST) to develop and test micro-turbojet engine technology for unmanned systems.
Thunder Tiger announced that it signed a memorandum of understanding with NCSIST on Aug. 20, launching cooperation focused on the manufacturing and testing of micro-turbojet engines. The partnership is aimed at strengthening Taiwan’s ability to produce critical propulsion systems and key components domestically while building a more resilient, China-free supply chain.
The agreement could become an important step in Taiwan’s rapidly expanding drone industry, where propulsion has emerged as one of the most critical pieces of the supply chain.
A new engine for Thunder Tiger’s drone ambitions
At the center of the partnership is Thunder Tiger’s PapaDelta PD-136j Turbojet, part of the company’s Persistent Dominance or “Iron Triangle” series.
Thunder Tiger plans to equip the turbojet version with NCSIST’s CS-80 micro-turbojet engine.
The company says the same drone family can also use a 250cc piston engine, giving the platform a modular approach to propulsion. Both configurations use the same aluminum-alloy stamped airframe, manufactured by Thunder Tiger subsidiary Ke Jian Aluminum Boat.
That common-airframe approach could allow the company to adjust propulsion according to mission requirements while maintaining manufacturing consistency—a potentially important advantage if Taiwan wants to move toward larger-scale unmanned-system production.
Why the turbojet partnership matters
For many drones, propulsion is more than just an engine. It affects range, speed, endurance, payload capacity and the overall design of the aircraft.
By working directly with NCSIST, Taiwan’s government-backed defense research organization, Thunder Tiger is attempting to bring more of that critical technology into the domestic supply chain.
The partnership combines NCSIST’s defense research and development capabilities with Thunder Tiger’s experience in drone-platform design, system integration, manufacturing and mass production.
The companies said future technical implementation, licensing and cooperation arrangements will be negotiated separately for individual projects. Assembly, production and manufacturing are expected to be carried out principally in Taiwan.
Taiwan’s bigger drone strategy
The deal comes as Taiwan is rapidly expanding its domestic unmanned-systems industry amid growing security concerns and increasing international demand for drones.
In May, CNA reported that Taiwanese companies—including NCSIST and Thunder Tiger—were promoting drones, AI systems and components at a major U.S. drone exhibition as Taipei sought to build overseas markets and reduce dependence on Chinese-linked supply chains.
That push has accelerated as Taiwan seeks what officials and industry executives describe as a “non-red” supply chain—one that minimizes reliance on Chinese components and manufacturing.
Thunder Tiger has already been positioning itself for the international defense market. Its FPV drone became the first Taiwanese drone system reported to have received U.S. Department of Defense Blue UAS certification, a designation associated with cybersecurity and supply-chain requirements for U.S. government procurement.
The company has also been expanding its overseas manufacturing footprint. Ars Technica reported that Thunder Tiger established a facility in Ohio capable of producing more than 60,000 drone motors annually, underscoring the company’s push into the U.S. market.
The U.S. market is the next big target
The timing of the engine partnership is significant.
Thunder Tiger plans to take the PapaDelta PD-136j Turbojet to Washington in October for the Association of the United States Army (AUSA) defense exhibition, where it intends to showcase Taiwan’s capabilities in low-cost, mass-producible loitering unmanned systems and domestically controlled propulsion technology.
That gives the company a chance to pitch not only a drone platform, but an increasingly integrated Taiwanese supply chain behind it.
The strategy fits a broader trend in Taiwan’s defense industry: develop the airframe, propulsion, software and critical components domestically, then use international partnerships to expand into markets such as the United States, Japan and Europe.
This is bigger than one drone
Thunder Tiger’s cooperation with NCSIST is also part of a wider expansion of Taiwan’s unmanned-systems ecosystem.
In 2025, Thunder Tiger partnered with Taiwan’s Aerospace Industrial Development Corp. (AIDC) on the T-400 unmanned helicopter. The aircraft is designed for both military and commercial applications, including reconnaissance, logistics and offshore industrial missions.
Thunder Tiger has also worked with Auterion on integrating AI and autonomous capabilities across its unmanned platforms, while NCSIST has pursued its own international partnerships to strengthen Taiwan’s drone and autonomous-systems capabilities.
The result is an emerging Taiwanese defense ecosystem that increasingly combines domestic hardware manufacturing, indigenous defense research and foreign software and technology partnerships.
What happens next?
The micro-turbojet agreement is still at the cooperation stage, meaning it should not be interpreted as confirmation that large-scale production of CS-80-powered drones has already begun.
The immediate milestone will be the development and testing work between Thunder Tiger and NCSIST, followed by decisions on specific technology applications, licensing and production arrangements.
But if the technology reaches reliable, scalable production, the implications could extend well beyond one drone model.
Taiwan would gain another piece of the propulsion supply chain needed to produce sophisticated unmanned systems without depending as heavily on foreign or China-linked components.
And with Thunder Tiger preparing to showcase its turbojet-powered platform in Washington, the company’s next move could reveal just how far Taiwan’s domestic drone industry has progressed.
The race is no longer simply about building more drones. It is increasingly about controlling the engines, components and technology that make those drones possible.
