HINIGARAN, Negros Occidental — What was supposed to be a family outing ended in tragedy after a 7-year-old girl drowned while swimming with her siblings and two other minors at a beach resort in Barangay Gargato, Hinigaran, on August 21.
According to the Hinigaran Municipal Police Station, the incident happened at around 12:20 p.m. at Ma-ay Beach Resort, where the child had gone swimming with her older sister, another sibling and two minor neighbors.
Police said the girl, a resident of Remedios Ville in Barangay Gargato, went toward the shoreline after the group arrived at the resort.
The situation quickly turned dangerous when she reportedly stepped into a deeper portion of the shoreline and struggled against the waves.
Her companions attempted to rescue her but were unable to pull her to safety.
Beachgoers and personnel from the Hinigaran Municipal Police Station eventually retrieved the child from the water. CPR was immediately administered in an effort to revive her.
The Hinigaran police, together with the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO) Rescue Team, rushed the girl to the Hinigaran Medical Clinic for emergency treatment.
Despite the rescue and resuscitation efforts, the attending physician declared the child dead on arrival.
A TRAGIC REMINDER FOR FAMILIES
The incident highlights the dangers children can face around open water, particularly along shorelines where water depth and wave conditions can change unexpectedly.
For parents and guardians, authorities and safety advocates have repeatedly stressed the importance of maintaining close, active supervision whenever children are swimming or playing near beaches, pools, rivers or other bodies of water.
Even seemingly shallow shoreline areas can become hazardous when a child suddenly steps into deeper water or encounters stronger waves.
In this case, police said the girl was with other minors when the accident happened. The circumstances surrounding the drowning remain based on the initial police account, and no additional allegations regarding negligence or wrongdoing have been reported in the sources reviewed.
The tragedy serves as another painful reminder that constant supervision and immediate access to rescue assistance can be critical when children are around water.
For now, the community of Hinigaran mourns the loss of a young life cut short during what was meant to be an ordinary day at the beach.
