MALITBOG, Southern Leyte — More than 4,000 families in Malitbog, Southern Leyte, received 10 kilograms of rice each as the national government’s food assistance program reached 4,245 beneficiaries across 20 barangays on August 13.
The distribution delivered approximately 42,000 kilograms of rice to indigent individuals and families through the Local Government Support Fund–Financial Assistance to Local Government Units (LGSF-FALGU) Food Assistance Rice Distribution Project.
The assistance was implemented by the Southern Leyte Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office (PSWDO) in coordination with the Malitbog Municipal Social Welfare and Development Office (MSWDO).
For families struggling to stretch their household budgets, the rice assistance provides immediate relief by reducing the amount they need to spend on one of the country’s most essential food staples.
42,000 kilos distributed across 20 barangays
The scale of the Malitbog distribution is significant: 4,245 beneficiaries were each allotted 10 kilograms, resulting in roughly 42 metric tons of rice delivered to communities.
Malitbog MSWD officer Majalalil Flores thanked the national and provincial governments, as well as the social welfare teams involved in organizing the distribution. She said the program helped ensure assistance reached families who needed it most.
Southern Leyte Provincial Social Welfare and Development Officer Jonah Gaviola likewise described the rice assistance as a concrete intervention for indigent families, while Gov. Damian G. Mercado expressed appreciation for continued national government funding for programs directly reaching communities.
Mercado emphasized that the assistance represents more than food support, saying each sack of rice serves as a reminder that government remains present and ready to help families in need.
Part of a wider 2026 food-assistance effort
The Malitbog distribution is part of a broader 2026 government initiative using the LGSF-FALGU to provide food assistance through local government units.
Similar rice distributions have been documented in other parts of the country. In Bacarra, Ilocos Norte, for example, qualified households received 10 kilograms of rice each under the same LGSF-FALGU and Assistance to Indigent Individuals or Families–Food Assistance Rice Distribution Project. The municipality said its allocation was intended to benefit more than 9,000 households.
The Department of the Interior and Local Government has also described the rice distribution project as part of broader efforts to strengthen food security and support vulnerable families during periods of economic hardship. DILG monitoring in Zamboanga del Norte showed the program being implemented across multiple barangays, with beneficiaries receiving 10 kilograms of rice each.
Local government records elsewhere also show that the program is being implemented through procurement and distribution arrangements funded by LGSF-FALGU, demonstrating that Malitbog’s assistance is part of a nationwide implementation rather than an isolated local initiative.
Assistance moves to Sogod next
The rice distribution effort in Southern Leyte is not ending with Malitbog.
According to the Philippine Information Agency, the program is scheduled to continue in Sogod on August 18, potentially bringing the assistance to more families in another municipality of the province.
For Malitbog’s 4,245 beneficiaries, however, the immediate impact is already tangible: 10 kilograms of rice have reached each household, with 42,000 kilograms distributed across 20 barangays.
The next question is how many more Southern Leyte families will be reached as the government-funded assistance continues rolling into other communities.
