BASILAN, Philippines — Two people were wounded in a drive-by shooting in Basilan, prompting police to launch an investigation into the attack and the identities of the gunmen.
The incident adds to growing concerns over firearm-related violence in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM), where authorities have been enforcing heightened security measures ahead of the region’s parliamentary elections.
Police are expected to determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting, including the identities of the attackers, the weapons used and the possible motive behind the assault.
The latest incident comes against a backdrop of continuing gun-related violence in BARMM. In late August, police reported that the region had recorded 43 gun-related incidents since the election gun ban took effect on July 16, with Basilan accounting for four of those cases at that point. Authorities said the incidents across the region had resulted in deaths and injuries.
Days later, another report documented separate shootings in the region that left one person dead and two others wounded, pushing the reported number of gun-related incidents to 45, with 15 deaths and 10 wounded since the implementation of the gun ban.
Basilan faces renewed security concerns
The shooting also comes as authorities in Basilan have been stepping up coordination ahead of the Bangsamoro parliamentary elections.
Security and election officials met in early September for a Provincial Joint Security Control Center conference aimed at strengthening coordination and security preparations across the province.
Government and MILF representatives have likewise reaffirmed their commitment to a peaceful electoral process, with officials stressing cooperation and ceasefire-related mechanisms during the upcoming BARMM polls.
But the continued reports of shootings underscore the challenge confronting security forces as they attempt to keep firearms and armed groups under control during a politically sensitive period.
Another shooting reported days later
Basilan also recorded another shooting incident on September 7 in Barangay Sabong, Lamitan City.
According to police information reported by SunStar Zamboanga, Barangay Sabong Chairman Alvin Aransail and two companions escaped unharmed when two masked motorcycle-riding gunmen opened fire. Another man, Antonio Escotu, was wounded and taken to Lamitan District Hospital. Police recovered five spent 9mm cartridges and one .45-caliber cartridge at the scene.
Authorities said the gunmen fled toward downtown Lamitan City and that the motive had yet to be established. Follow-up operations were launched to identify and arrest the suspects.
The incident was particularly significant because it occurred amid the implementation of the election gun ban. Local reporting said investigators had yet to determine whether the firearms involved were legally registered or were being carried in violation of the restrictions.
Police investigation continues
For the latest Basilan shooting, authorities are expected to examine physical evidence, witness accounts and other leads as they work to establish exactly how the attack unfolded.
The identities of the attackers and their motive remain key questions for investigators.
Police have not indicated that the incident was politically motivated unless and until evidence establishes such a connection. Any link to the upcoming elections should therefore be treated as unconfirmed.
The latest shooting nevertheless highlights the continuing security challenges facing Basilan and the wider BARMM region as authorities work to prevent further violence during a crucial electoral period.
For now, investigators are focused on identifying the gunmen and determining why the victims were targeted.
