LUCENA CITY, Philippines — What began as a tense search for two fishermen reported missing in Batangas waters ended in relief after both men were found alive and in good condition nearly 20 hours later.
The two fishermen were reported missing early Thursday, August 20, after their motorized fishing boat encountered engine trouble while they were returning from a fishing trip in Balayan Bay, Batangas, according to the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG).
The fishermen were later spotted by fellow fishers at around 11:30 p.m. Thursday in waters off Barangay Anak Dagat in Lemery, Batangas.
Coast Guard personnel immediately proceeded to the area and rescued the two men, bringing them safely ashore. Barangay health workers who checked on them reported that both were in good condition and had no injuries.
Engine trouble left fishermen unable to navigate
According to the fishermen, their boat developed engine problems at around 3 a.m. Thursday, while they were making their way home from the fishing trip.
With the engine no longer functioning properly, the men were unable to navigate their boat normally and were left stranded at sea.
The situation was made more difficult because they did not have communication equipment, meaning they could not immediately contact their families or alert authorities that they were in distress.
Their eventual discovery by fellow fishermen proved crucial in ending the search.
PCG stresses importance of communication equipment
Following the rescue, the Philippine Coast Guard reminded fishermen to bring appropriate communication devices and essential safety equipment whenever going out to sea.
The agency emphasized that having a reliable means of communication can make a critical difference during maritime emergencies, allowing fishermen to alert authorities and their families when a vessel encounters mechanical problems or other dangers.
The incident also highlights the importance of cooperation among fishermen and coastal communities. In this case, the two men were located after fellow fishermen spotted their boat and helped alert authorities.
Not the first recent fishing emergency involving Batangas
The latest rescue comes amid other maritime incidents involving fishermen operating from or around Batangas.
In February 2026, the PCG also mounted an extensive search for four fishermen from Lian, Batangas, after their fishing vessel failed to return from a trip toward the waters off Ambil and Lubang Islands. Three were eventually rescued alive after their vessel was found drifting roughly 102 nautical miles off Cabra Island in Lubang, Occidental Mindoro, while one fisherman was confirmed dead.
That earlier incident similarly involved engine failure, with the fishing vessel reportedly drifting at sea for several days before another fishing vessel spotted the distressed boat.
The contrasting outcomes underscore how quickly a routine fishing trip can turn into a life-threatening emergency—and why communication equipment, safety gear and rapid reporting remain essential for fishermen.
For the two fishermen rescued in Balayan Bay, however, the search ended with the outcome their families had been hoping for: both were found alive, safe and without injuries.
