A 59-year-old woman has been arrested in Kuala Lumpur after allegedly pushing a 79-year-old woman into a roadside drain, leaving the elderly victim with injuries to her head, arm and back.
The incident happened on Sept. 18 at Jalan Hujan Rahmat Dua in OUG, Jalan Klang Lama, at around 10:30 a.m. Police said the victim, a former Selangor hockey player, had gone to a shop before allegedly being followed by the suspect.
According to preliminary police findings, the suspect was waiting outside the shop when the victim came out. She allegedly approached the elderly woman and pushed her, causing her to fall into the drain. CCTV footage obtained by police reportedly captured the suspect outside the premises before the incident.
The victim suffered injuries to the back of her head, left hand and back. She was taken to University Malaya Medical Centre, where she remained in the emergency ward for four days before being discharged on Sept. 21, according to police.
The victim’s friend reported the incident to police, leading officers to arrest the suspect on the same day. Police also seized clothing believed to have been worn during the alleged assault as part of the investigation.
Police said the suspect, who previously contested as an independent candidate in Malaysia’s 15th General Election, denied pushing the woman when questioned. Investigators also said the two women did not appear to know each other and that the victim had reported no prior dispute with the suspect.
The suspect was remanded for one day before the Kuala Lumpur Magistrate’s Court ordered her to undergo psychiatric assessment and treatment to assist the investigation. Reports differ on some details surrounding the suspect’s mental-health status, so those details remain subject to the ongoing investigation rather than being treated as an established finding.
Police are investigating the case under Section 325 of Malaysia’s Penal Code, which concerns voluntarily causing grievous hurt. Investigators are still awaiting the victim’s complete medical report and doctor’s statement before the investigation papers are referred to the Deputy Public Prosecutor for further instructions.
The case has drawn attention because the alleged assault occurred in a public area and was reportedly captured on CCTV, while the motive remains unclear. Authorities have not announced any conviction, and the suspect’s denial remains part of the ongoing legal process.
The bigger question now is what investigators will uncover about the alleged encounter—and why the elderly woman was apparently targeted despite police saying the two did not know each other.
