KHARKIV REGION, Ukraine — Inside workshops close to one of the world’s most dangerous front lines, Ukraine is building machines intended to go where soldiers increasingly cannot.
Some carry food and ammunition. Others drag wounded troops out of exposed positions. Still others carry machine guns, explosives or bombs toward Russian forces.
And Ukraine wants far more of them.
The expanding fleet of unmanned ground vehicles, or UGVs, has become one of the clearest signs of how the Russia-Ukraine war is accelerating a transformation in land warfare—one driven not merely by better weapons, but by an effort to remove human beings from the most lethal parts of the battlefield.
Ukraine’s “Hyenas” Are Built to Enter the Kill Zone
Reuters journalists visiting Ukraine’s NC13 unit, part of the Third Army Corps, saw four-wheeled ground robots known as “Hyenas” being prepared for frontline missions.
Some can be packed with explosives and driven toward Russian defensive positions. Military mechanic “Chimera” told Reuters that a robot could carry roughly 20 kilograms, or 44 pounds, of explosives. Members of the unit also said similar unmanned systems had been involved in operations in which Russian soldiers surrendered.
NC13 operators do not simply send the vehicles forward and hope for the best. Reuters observed personnel controlling the machines from screens and controllers in a protected command center.
In one operation described by the unit, a UGV transported explosives toward a bridge used for Russian logistics. In another, a ground robot equipped with a machine gun provided suppressing fire while aerial kamikaze drones attacked from above.
That combination—robots on the ground and drones overhead—offers a glimpse at what Ukrainian commanders believe future battlefield formations could look like.
Human soldiers would remain central to planning, decision-making and complex assaults, but machines could increasingly perform the jobs most likely to get troops killed.
One Ukrainian Corps Wants Robots to Replace About a Third of Frontline Roles
The most eye-catching ambition comes from Brigadier General Andrii Biletskyi, commander of Ukraine’s Third Army Corps.
Biletskyi told Reuters that his corps wants to replace roughly one-third of its frontline personnel with unmanned ground systems by the end of 2026. He described the gradual substitution of infantry with robots as the next major “revolution” in warfare.
There is an important distinction here.
That one-third target refers to the Third Army Corps’ plans, not an announced target to replace one-third of the entire Ukrainian armed forces. Presenting it as an army-wide plan would exaggerate the scope of the policy.
Still, the corps is far from an experimental sideshow. Ukraine’s presidential office said in August that Biletskyi’s formation was responsible for a defensive sector stretching as much as 171 kilometers, or about 12% of the entire front, and specifically credited the commander with integrating unmanned ground robotic systems.
The strategy reflects a brutal battlefield reality.
Years of war have created intense pressure on Ukrainian manpower, while drones have made exposed movement extraordinarily dangerous. The front has become saturated with surveillance and strike systems capable of detecting vehicles or soldiers and attacking them within minutes.
A machine destroyed while delivering ammunition is costly.
A soldier killed doing the same job cannot be replaced in the same way.
Ground Robots Are Already Doing Tens of Thousands of Missions
The scale of Ukraine’s robotic operations is growing much faster than the Reuters report’s earlier figures might suggest.
Ukraine’s Defense Ministry said that 25,143 logistics and casualty-evacuation missions were carried out by ground robotic systems in August alone, compared with 7,511 in January.
By early September, Ukraine’s DELTA battlefield-management system had recorded about 112,000 logistics and evacuation missions involving UGVs since the beginning of 2026. August’s monthly total was therefore roughly 3.3 times January’s level.
That means ground robots are no longer niche prototypes occasionally appearing in promotional videos.
They are increasingly becoming part of everyday battlefield logistics.
The systems transport ammunition, food and water into dangerous positions while also bringing wounded personnel back toward medical treatment—missions that would otherwise require soldiers or conventional vehicles to expose themselves to mines, artillery and drones.
The rapid expansion has begun attracting serious commercial investment as well.
The Wall Street Journal reported this week that U.S.-based Swarmer, which develops software for coordinating drone swarms, is acquiring Ukrainian ground-robot producer Ratel Robotics in a transaction potentially worth as much as $224 million. The report described Ukraine’s defense-drone industry as comprising more than 500 companies, illustrating how wartime innovation is beginning to produce a significant defense-technology business ecosystem.
The Robots Can Save Lives — But They Still Have Serious Weaknesses
Ground robots are not replacements for infantry in every situation.
They can become stuck on broken terrain, fail to negotiate trenches or rubble and lose communication links. They also cannot yet enter and clear buildings with anything approaching the adaptability of trained soldiers.
A recent battlefield rescue illustrated those limitations dramatically.
Reuters reported in August that two wounded Ukrainian troops were being evacuated on a ground drone when a Russian attack drone struck the vehicle and disabled its Starlink communications terminal.
The robot stopped in an exposed battlefield “kill zone,” leaving the wounded soldiers stranded until Ukrainian junior lieutenant Vladyslav Polskyi drove a pickup through the dangerous area and rescued them himself. He was later awarded the Hero of Ukraine title.
The incident captured both sides of Ukraine’s robotic revolution.
Automation can remove soldiers from danger—but when technology fails, humans may still have to enter the danger themselves.
Al Jazeera similarly reported in August that Ukrainian UGVs remain vulnerable to difficult terrain and communications problems even as models such as the tracked Murakha, or “Ant,” take on supply, evacuation and explosive missions.
Why “Killer Robots” Needs an Important Qualification
The phrase makes for a striking headline, but it can also be misleading.
The Ukrainian machines documented in the Reuters report are largely remote-controlled systems operated by human crews. Official Ukrainian military recruitment material for UGV operators explicitly describes personnel controlling ground drones remotely, often from sheltered positions.
That is fundamentally different from a fully autonomous lethal weapon that identifies, selects and attacks a human target without meaningful human control.
Ukraine is unquestionably moving deeper into battlefield automation. Artificial intelligence is being incorporated into surveillance, navigation, targeting assistance and battlefield-data analysis, while both Russia and Ukraine continue developing increasingly sophisticated unmanned weapons.
But “remote controlled,” “AI-assisted” and “fully autonomous” should not be treated as interchangeable terms.
The distinction matters because governments are simultaneously wrestling with whether machines should ever be allowed to make lethal targeting decisions on their own.
The Global Fight Over Autonomous Weapons Is Happening at the Same Time
Ukraine’s rapid adoption of robotic warfare is unfolding just as international negotiations over autonomous weapons are reaching a critical point.
Representatives of 128 countries met in Geneva this month under the Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons to debate possible restrictions governing lethal autonomous weapons systems.
Reuters reported that disagreements involving the United States, Russia and other states have complicated efforts to advance stronger international rules. Supporters of a legally binding framework argue that meaningful human control over lethal decisions must be preserved, while countries favoring a looser approach contend that existing international humanitarian law already provides substantial safeguards.
The United Nations and International Committee of the Red Cross have separately intensified calls for binding rules, warning about systems capable of selecting and attacking human targets without meaningful human intervention.
That debate makes Ukraine especially important.
What is being tested in Ukrainian workshops and trenches today could influence military procurement and doctrine far beyond Eastern Europe tomorrow.
Ukraine Is Effectively Running a Battlefield Technology Laboratory
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s government has made unmanned technology one of Ukraine’s central military priorities.
Official Ukrainian material says ground robotic systems have already been used for logistics, casualty evacuation, mine-laying and fire support, and Kyiv has previously reported an operation in which an enemy position was seized using unmanned platforms rather than conventional troops.
Ukraine is also trying to turn that wartime expertise into international industrial partnerships.
During Zelenskyy’s visit to Canada this week, Ukrainian and Canadian companies displayed several unmanned projects, including a joint unmanned ground-vehicle prototype, alongside aerial drones and secure communications technology.
The implications extend well beyond Ukraine.
For decades, armies have spent enormous sums protecting soldiers inside increasingly sophisticated tanks and armored vehicles.
Ukraine’s experience suggests another approach: instead of making every vehicle survivable for a human crew, make some vehicles cheap enough—and unmanned enough—that commanders can risk losing the machine rather than the soldier.
That could dramatically change the economics of ground warfare.
The Human Soldier Isn’t Disappearing Yet
Even Ukraine’s strongest advocates of robotics do not portray UGVs as a magic weapon.
The machines cannot improvise like infantry. They struggle with obstacles. They depend on communications. Their numbers remain limited compared with aerial drones. And highly complex missions still require human judgment.
Ukraine’s own political leadership has emphasized that technology is intended to protect troops rather than make soldiers irrelevant.
During an August ceremony honoring commanders including Biletskyi, Zelenskyy said technology mattered because it could help safeguard the people fighting the war.
That may be the most important point behind Ukraine’s robotics push.
The immediate goal is not necessarily to create science-fiction armies in which autonomous machines fight entire battles alone.
It is to reach the stage where a commander facing a mined road, an exposed supply route or an enemy position can ask a different question:
Why send a soldier when a machine can go first?
And that is where the story becomes much larger than Ukraine.
The robots being tested today may still require operators, struggle with rubble and occasionally become stranded.
But their numbers are climbing rapidly. Their missions are becoming more ambitious. Artificial intelligence is advancing alongside them. And military planners around the world are watching.
Ukraine’s ground robots may be replacing humans in some of war’s most dangerous jobs now. The unanswered question is what happens when the machines no longer need humans to make every decision.
