Two Young Siblings Die in Oriental Mindoro House Fire—What Rescuers Found Beside Them Broke Hearts

NAUJAN, Oriental Mindoro — A devastating house fire in Naujan, Oriental Mindoro claimed the lives of two young siblings and injured their grandmother late Thursday night, leaving a family and an entire community in mourning.

The victims, aged 7 and 11, were killed after a fire engulfed their home in Barangay Barcenaga at around 10:30 p.m. on August 27, according to initial information from authorities.

Their grandmother survived the blaze after jumping from a window to escape, while four of the children’s cousins who were also inside the house managed to get out unharmed.

But it was what responders reportedly found inside the children’s room that added another heartbreaking layer to the tragedy: the siblings were found still embracing their pet dog.

Police Eye Overloaded Extension Cord as Possible Cause

Staff Sgt. Fernan Macuha of the Naujan Police Station said investigators are looking into an overloaded extension cord being used to power an electric fan as the possible cause of the fire.

The cause, however, should be treated as part of the initial investigation, pending any final determination by fire investigators and authorities.

The tragedy is especially painful for the children’s family. Their mother is reportedly working abroad, while their father died nearly two years ago after he was electrocuted while working as a lineman for the local electric cooperative.

Naujan Government Pledges Help for Bereaved Family

Naujan Mayor Henry Teves extended his condolences to the grieving family and said the local government would shoulder the victims’ funeral and burial expenses, according to an interview with ABS-CBN Teleradyo cited in initial reports.

As the community comes to terms with the devastating loss, the incident also serves as a painful reminder of the dangers that electrical overloads and unsafe connections can pose inside homes—particularly at night, when families may have little time to escape.

For now, a family is left grieving two young lives lost far too soon—and a community is mourning a tragedy that began with an ordinary night at home and ended in unimaginable heartbreak.

Authorities continue to look into the circumstances surrounding the fire.
