The voice that taught generations what it meant to be a hero has fallen silent. Peter Cullen, the legendary voice actor behind Optimus Prime in the Transformers franchise, has died at the age of 85.
Cullen died peacefully at his home in Los Angeles on Wednesday, August 26, surrounded by his family, according to reports confirmed by his agent, Kevin Motley. A cause of death has not been disclosed. His passing was reported internationally on August 27 and 28, 2026.
For millions of fans around the world, Cullen was more than a voice actor. His deep, commanding baritone became the heart and soul of Optimus Prime, the heroic leader of the Autobots—a character he first brought to life in the original 1984 animated Transformers series.
He later returned to the role for the blockbuster live-action Transformers films beginning in 2007, introducing his unmistakable voice to an entirely new generation of fans. His work as Optimus Prime continued through major films including Bumblebee and Transformers: Rise of the Beasts.
The Man Behind Optimus Prime’s Voice
One of the most remarkable stories behind Cullen’s iconic performance was its inspiration. According to Cullen and accounts shared by Hasbro, he based Optimus Prime’s calm authority and sense of honor on his older brother, Larry, a Marine veteran.
That inspiration helped shape the character into more than a fictional robot leader. Optimus Prime became a symbol of courage, sacrifice and compassion—and one of the most beloved characters in modern pop culture.
In a statement following his death, Cullen’s family asked fans to honor his legacy through compassion, integrity and loyalty, echoing the philosophy closely associated with the character he made famous.
His Legacy Went Far Beyond Transformers
While Optimus Prime remains his most iconic role, Cullen’s extraordinary career stretched across more than six decades. He was also widely recognized as the voice of Eeyore in several Winnie-the-Pooh projects and worked on productions including G.I. Joe, The Smurfs and Knight Rider. He also contributed vocal work to the 1976 King Kong remake and created the memorable clicking sounds of the creature in the original Predator.
His impact on the entertainment industry was formally recognized with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Children’s & Family Emmy Awards in 2023, while his portrayal of Optimus Prime also earned him a Daytime Emmy nomination.
Cullen is survived by his four children, Angus, Claire, Pilar and Clay, according to the Associated Press.
