Tatler Philippines at 25: Defining Moments That Shaped the Past Quarter Century

Tatler Philippines is marking its 25th anniversary by looking back at the people, events and cultural shifts that have shaped the country since the magazine was launched in 2001.

The publication began during a turbulent period. The Philippines was navigating political uncertainty, conflict in the south and the lingering effects of the global “I Love You” computer virus, while the world was soon transformed by the September 11 attacks.

The events of 2001 changed everyday life in ways that extended far beyond politics. Air travel became more heavily regulated, while heightened security measures became a lasting feature of international travel.

For Tatler Philippines, those early years established a pattern of documenting how major events influenced society, culture and the way people lived.

The Philippines’ entertainment landscape was also very different when the magazine launched. Television remained the dominant source of celebrity culture, with stars such as Judy Ann Santos, Piolo Pascual, Claudine Barretto, Aga Muhlach, Sharon Cuneta and Kris Aquino among the country’s most recognisable personalities.

Music was similarly shaped by a different era. Filipino bands including Rivermaya, Parokya ni Edgar, Eraserheads and Side A remained influential, while international stars such as Britney Spears, Eminem, Beyoncé and Kanye West dominated global pop culture.

Technology was beginning to transform everyday life. Nokia mobile phones were becoming increasingly popular, internet cafés provided access to the growing online world, and text messaging was still one of the main ways Filipinos communicated.

Social media had yet to reshape public conversation. Platforms such as TikTok, Instagram and Facebook were either years away or had not yet become part of everyday life, while the internet was still developing into the powerful cultural force it would eventually become.

The country’s food and retail scenes were also evolving. Starbucks had entered the Philippine market in the late 1990s, helping accelerate the growth of coffee culture and creating greater opportunities for local coffee producers.

Fashion was undergoing its own transformation, with fast fashion and designer collaborations gaining momentum internationally. Collaborations between major retailers and designers would eventually become a defining feature of the industry.

Over the following 25 years, Tatler Philippines witnessed major changes in technology, entertainment, fashion, business and popular culture, as well as crises that affected communities around the world.

The Covid-19 pandemic became another defining moment, forcing businesses and individuals to adapt while dramatically changing how people worked, travelled and interacted.

Through these changes, the magazine continued to document the people and ideas influencing Filipino society. Its coverage expanded alongside the country itself, reflecting changing definitions of luxury, achievement, creativity and cultural influence.

The anniversary also provides an opportunity to look toward the future. Tatler Philippines’ silver anniversary is being celebrated through Tatler Most Stylish 2026, bringing together personalities from entertainment, business, fashion, sport and the creative industries.

From established figures to younger voices, the anniversary reflects the generations that have helped shape the publication’s story and the culture around it.

After 25 years, Tatler Philippines’ history is closely intertwined with the changes that have transformed the country and the wider world. Its anniversary offers a chance to revisit those defining moments while considering the people and ideas that could shape the next chapter.
