Taiwan’s Homegrown Rocket Just Broke the Sound Barrier — But This Is Only the Beginning

The Taiwan Space Agency (TASA) successfully launched the Maraho (島脈 MARAHO) sounding rocket from the Xuhai Indigenous Scientific Rocket Launch Site in Pingtung County at 7:10 a.m. on Saturday, August 22, completing a crucial first flight test for the country’s long-term orbital rocket programme.

The rocket’s numbers tell an impressive story.

Maraho’s engine fired for approximately 18 seconds, generating about 1,500 kilogram-force of liftoff thrust. It accelerated to a maximum speed of 408 metres per second — around Mach 1.2, or faster than the speed of sound — and reached a peak altitude of 8.1 kilometres. Its total flight lasted 432 seconds, according to TASA and multiple Taiwanese news reports.

More importantly, the test successfully completed its planned sequence, including ignition, flight and parachute deployment, while establishing stable end-to-end communications between the rocket and the ground team. That allowed engineers to receive critical flight data in real time — one of the mission’s key objectives.

The Rocket Was Lost at Sea — But the Mission Was Still a Success

There was one setback: rough sea conditions prevented the recovery of the rocket body after the flight.

However, officials said the inability to retrieve the vehicle did not undermine the mission’s main objectives because the required flight verification data had already been transmitted and collected during the test.

The mission was designed to put several domestically developed systems through a real-world flight environment, including propulsion, structural systems, avionics, communications, tracking, ground support and recovery technologies.

Taiwanese aerospace experts told local media that the successful communications test and the flight data collected during the mission represented an important validation of the rocket’s systems. The hybrid propulsion technology and the rocket’s structural performance were also closely watched during the test.

Why This Launch Matters for Taiwan’s Future in Space

Maraho is more than just a one-off rocket launch.

TASA launched its orbital launch vehicle programme in 2023 with the long-term ambition of giving Taiwan the capability to independently launch satellites into space. The programme ultimately aims to develop a launch vehicle capable of carrying a 200-kilogram payload into low Earth orbit.

The Maraho sounding rocket serves as an early testing platform for the technologies Taiwan will need to achieve that goal.

According to TASA’s published programme plans, Taiwan is working toward progressively more advanced test vehicles before attempting an orbital launch in the coming years. The agency’s broader roadmap targets the development of indigenous satellite launch capabilities, with an eventual orbital test planned around 2034.

In other words, Saturday’s flight reached just 8.1 kilometres — far below the roughly 100-kilometre boundary commonly used to define the edge of space — but its importance lies in the technology being tested rather than the altitude achieved.

Every successful test helps engineers identify weaknesses, improve designs and reduce the risks involved in developing much larger and more powerful launch vehicles.

A Name Inspired by Taiwan’s National Butterfly

The rocket’s name also carries a distinctly Taiwanese identity.

Maraho is named after Papilio maraho, the Taiwan broad-tailed swallowtail butterfly, a species closely associated with Taiwan. Its distinctive red tail markings inspired comparisons to the fiery exhaust trail of a rocket lifting off.

The name is a fitting symbol for a programme built around transformation: from a small experimental rocket to a potential future launch system capable of carrying Taiwan’s satellites into orbit.

A Bigger Space Race Is Taking Shape

The successful Maraho flight comes as Taiwan continues to invest in its high-tech and aerospace capabilities. TASA has increasingly emphasised the development of domestic space infrastructure, satellite technology and launch capabilities as part of Taiwan’s broader technological ambitions.

The road ahead remains long. Developing an orbital launch vehicle requires far more powerful propulsion systems, extensive testing and the ability to safely place a payload into orbit — a challenge far beyond launching a sounding rocket.

But Saturday morning’s successful test delivered something Taiwan’s space programme needs before it can take that next giant leap: proof that its homegrown technology can perform outside the laboratory and in the sky.

For now, Maraho has completed its first mission.

The bigger question is what Taiwan’s next rocket will be capable of reaching.
