TAIPEI, Taiwan — Getting cash at high altitude just became easier in Taiwan, with Chunghwa Post putting the country’s highest-altitude ATM into service at Fushoushan Farm in Taichung, approximately 2,240 meters above sea level.
The ATM is located inside the farm’s visitor service center, bringing basic banking services closer to residents and tourists visiting the remote mountain destination.
Taiwan’s New Highest ATM
The newly installed machine provides cash withdrawals, transfers and balance inquiries, giving visitors access to basic financial services without having to make a separate trip down the mountain.
At 2,240 meters, the ATM sits 39 meters higher than the Alishan Post Office, which stands at 2,201 meters and remains Taiwan’s highest-altitude financial institution.
The distinction is important: the Fushoushan facility is the highest ATM, while Alishan Post Office remains the highest full-service financial institution.
Why Fushoushan Needed an ATM
Fushoushan Farm is a popular mountain destination known for its scenery, agricultural products and particularly its high-mountain apples.
Because of its remote location, visitors who needed cash previously had to travel farther to reach another ATM. Reports say the new machine is intended to make financial services more accessible for both tourists and people living in the surrounding mountain communities.
The farm attracts visitors throughout the year for tourism, accommodation and agricultural products, making access to cash particularly useful for local businesses and travelers.
The ATM Has an Apple-Shaped Attraction
Chunghwa Post has also turned the ATM into something of a tourism landmark.
The machine is accompanied by a distinctive apple-shaped ATM sign, a nod to Fushoushan’s reputation for producing apples.
The facility also features an elevation marker decorated with Chunghwa Post mascots Bobo the Pigeon and Persian Cat, creating another photo opportunity for visitors.
The approach combines practical financial access with local tourism branding.
A Costly Service in a Remote Mountain Area
Installing and maintaining an ATM in a remote high-altitude location presents challenges that don’t apply to machines in urban areas.
Earlier reports on the Fushoushan installation said annual operating costs could exceed NT$1 million, reflecting the expense of maintaining financial infrastructure in an isolated mountain destination. Chunghwa Post proceeded after evaluating the area’s needs and requests for improved financial access.
The project was also supported by local authorities and Fushoushan Farm, which had sought an ATM for visitors and residents.
Alishan Still Holds Another Record
The new Fushoushan ATM does not replace Alishan Post Office’s status as Taiwan’s highest financial institution.
Located at 2,201 meters, Alishan Post Office is known for its distinctive palace-style architecture and tourism-oriented services. It also offers foreign-currency cash exchange to meet the needs of international visitors.
The contrast gives Taiwan two notable high-altitude financial landmarks: Alishan has the highest post office, while Fushoushan now has the highest ATM.
Bringing Banking Services Higher Into the Mountains
Chunghwa Post said the expansion reflects its broader effort to provide financial services across Taiwan, including remote areas.
For Fushoushan, the new ATM may seem like a small piece of infrastructure, but for travelers who suddenly need cash while surrounded by mountains, it could make a significant practical difference.
And with its apple-shaped sign, the country’s newest record-setting ATM is likely to become more than just a place to withdraw money.
At 2,240 meters above sea level, Taiwan has officially taken banking to new heights — and this time, the landmark looks like an apple.
