TAIEX Reclaims 47,000 — But Can Taipei Keep the Volume?

TAIPEI — Taiwan’s TAIEX closed Friday at 47,180.75 after a 892.75-point, 1.93% surge that reclaimed the 47,000 level at the session high, according to exchange data compiled by BigGo’s finance desk. The advance tracked overnight gains in US technology shares, with the Nasdaq Composite up 1.69% and the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index up 3.14%.

Breadth mattered as much as the headline. The TPEx Index rose 3.64% to 412.68, while main-board turnover hit NT$1.075065 trillion (about US$33.8 billion). Including the over-the-counter market, total turnover exceeded NT$1.34 trillion, a clear price-up, volume-up session.

TSMC (2330.TW) led the heavyweights, rising NT$35 to NT$2,460 (+1.44%). United Microelectronics jumped 5.76% to NT$156, MediaTek climbed 4.67% to NT$4,710, and Global Unichip locked limit-up. Memory names Nanya Technology and Winbond Electronics also posted strong percentage gains, BigGo reported. Financial holdings were relatively soft on the day.

Lower oil prices and a pullback in Treasury yields helped ease inflation nerves for the chip-heavy market, while regional coverage from Reuters and The Edge Malaysia noted Taiwan and South Korea leading emerging Asia’s equity advance. Market participants flagged two near-term hinges: whether the US tech rebound holds, and whether foreign institutional buying persists — otherwise the index may consolidate around 47,000 as profit-taking digests the nearly 900-point jump.

Bottom line: Taipei got the reclaim and the volume; the follow-through question is foreign flows into TSMC and the broader electronics complex into next week’s open.
