South Korea’s AI Chip Boom Is Changing Dating, TV and College Choices — But the Biggest Shift May Be Happening to Jobs

SEOUL — South Korea’s artificial-intelligence boom is no longer confined to chip factories, corporate earnings calls or stock-market screens.

It is beginning to show up in an unlikely set of places: dating preferences, reality shows, university majors and the career decisions of young Koreans.

Employees of semiconductor giants Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, once regarded mainly as well-paid engineers at blue-chip companies, are increasingly being treated as some of the country’s most desirable marriage prospects as AI-driven demand for memory chips sends profits — and potential employee bonuses — soaring. CNBC reported that matchmaking company Gayeon has seen stronger demand for people employed by Samsung, SK Hynix and other AI-related businesses.

But behind the eye-catching dating story is something much larger.

South Korea’s AI boom is starting to influence where people want to work, what students want to study, what audiences watch — and who benefits from one of the biggest technology investment cycles in the country’s history.

Chip Engineers Are Becoming Korea’s New “Power Matches”

Doctors, lawyers and judges have traditionally ranked among South Korea’s most prestigious marriage prospects.

Now semiconductor workers are increasingly entering that conversation.

The reason is not difficult to understand. Samsung and SK Hynix have become central suppliers to the global AI infrastructure boom, particularly through advanced memory products required by increasingly powerful data centers.

SK Hynix crossed $1 trillion in market capitalization for the first time in May 2026, joining Samsung Electronics and Micron in the trillion-dollar club. Reuters reported that Samsung had passed the same threshold earlier that month.

At one point in June, SK Hynix even overtook Samsung Electronics to become South Korea’s most valuable listed company — a remarkable reversal in a market where Samsung had dominated the top position for decades.

And corporate wealth is spilling over into employee compensation.

SK Hynix and its unions agreed in 2025 to use 10% of annual operating profit as the pool for employee performance bonuses for 10 years. Based on projected 2026 profits and a workforce of roughly 35,000, estimates this year have put the average potential bonus at around 700 million won, although actual payments depend on company results, employee circumstances and the eventual compensation structure.

That is an extraordinary amount of money in South Korea — and it helps explain why employment at the country’s chip champions suddenly carries additional social prestige.

But there is an important qualification.

Those headline-grabbing bonus figures should not be interpreted as every employee receiving 700 million won in cash. SK Hynix management proposed paying a substantial portion in company shares, and production-worker unions rejected an August tentative agreement that would have put 60% of bonuses into treasury stock. Negotiations were sent back to the table.

Samsung has faced similar pressures. Reuters reported in May that a landmark labor agreement tied semiconductor-worker performance compensation to 10.5% of the division’s operating profit, potentially producing bonuses worth hundreds of thousands of dollars for some workers.

In other words, South Korea’s AI riches are becoming very visible — but how those riches are shared remains contentious.

AI Wealth Has Even Reached the Dating Shows

The cultural fascination has already found its way onto entertainment screens.

Producer Kim Tae-ho’s TEO launched a dating reality program in August featuring a 3-on-3 meeting between Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix employees.

The premise itself says something about how quickly perceptions have shifted.

The show, Sasaroun Mannam Chugu, was designed around busy single office workers in their 20s and 30s, but its first matchup deliberately placed employees from South Korea’s two semiconductor giants opposite one another. Later episodes were set to feature participants from traditionally elite professions including medicine and law.

CNBC reported that the Samsung-SK Hynix installment accumulated roughly 650,000 views, turning what might once have been a corporate-employment detail into part of the entertainment hook.

It is a striking indicator of how deeply the chip boom has entered popular culture.

Working at one of Korea’s biggest semiconductor companies is no longer simply a résumé credential.

It can now be a reality-show storyline.

Then the Stock Market Became Entertainment

South Korea’s extraordinary enthusiasm for stocks has produced another cultural crossover.

Netflix Korea premiered “Rookie Kim’s Stock Market Mission” in August, following comedian Kim Won-hun as he learns to trade stocks. The program prominently features Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, two companies at the center of Korea’s dramatic AI-stock cycle.

That concept has a large potential audience.

According to the Korea Capital Market Institute, the number of Korean retail shareholders increased from 6.14 million in 2019 to 14.42 million at the end of 2025, meaning more than one-quarter of South Korea’s population owned stocks.

Trading accounts surged further during 2026. Yonhap reported that South Korea had 108.7 million stock-trading accounts by June 24, although individuals can hold multiple accounts and that number should therefore not be confused with the number of unique investors.

That distinction matters because Korea’s AI story has been as much a financial phenomenon as a technological one.

At Seoul National University, Students Are Following the Money

Perhaps the clearest evidence that the AI-chip boom is affecting longer-term decisions can be found in education.

At Seoul National University’s College of Engineering, 33 students in its undeclared engineering program selected electrical and computer engineering in 2026.

That represented 89.2% of students assigned a major in the program, according to university data reported by Yonhap. Only 15 chose the discipline the previous year.

The trend is particularly notable because computer science had dominated the program during its early years.

More than 70% of students in the program chose computer engineering during each of its first two years after being introduced in 2023. Electrical and information engineering caught up last year and then overtook computer engineering in 2026.

The reason analysts see is straightforward: generative AI has increased the perceived importance of semiconductors, hardware and communications infrastructure.

Students are not only watching software companies build AI models.

They are watching Samsung and SK Hynix sell the physical memory required to run them — while employees potentially receive massive rewards.

For ambitious engineering students deciding where to concentrate their careers, that creates a powerful signal.

But Korea’s AI Success Story Has Another Side

The biggest danger in the viral narrative is assuming that everybody is benefiting equally.

They are not.

While engineers connected to the booming semiconductor sector are enjoying rising prestige, young Koreans in some occupations are simultaneously facing increasing anxiety that AI will reduce the number of entry-level jobs available.

A Bank of Korea analysis reported in August found that employment among Koreans aged 15 to 29 fell by 285,000 between June 2022 and June 2026, with 268,000 — or roughly 94% of the decline — occurring in industries considered highly exposed to AI, including IT services, publishing, computer programming and professional services.

The central bank cautioned that demographic decline also played a substantial role, meaning the job losses cannot simply be attributed to AI.

But policymakers are paying attention.

Another survey of 1,000 Koreans between 19 and 34 found 53.9% believed AI was likely to replace or reduce employment in their current or desired occupations within five years. Among job seekers, that figure climbed to 63.8%.

So the same technology boom making semiconductor engineers more attractive to employers — and apparently even to prospective romantic partners — is making other young Koreans increasingly uncertain about their careers.

That contradiction may ultimately be the more consequential story.

And the Stock-Market Boom Has Already Shown Its Risks

The AI rally has not moved in a straight line either.

South Korean stocks soared dramatically during the first half of 2026 as Samsung and SK Hynix became proxies for the global AI infrastructure buildout.

But the market subsequently suffered a brutal correction.

Reuters reported in August that the KOSPI had fallen roughly 30% from its June peak, with heavily leveraged retail investors hit especially hard after a speculative rush into AI-linked stocks and leveraged products.

SK Hynix itself remained sharply higher for the year in early August, but Reuters noted its shares had already lost nearly half their value from their June record high.

The market has since recovered part of those losses. The KOSPI closed at 6,687.21 on September 4, gaining 1.64% for the day as Samsung rose 2.2% and SK Hynix gained 3.2%.

That volatility is an important counterweight to the cultural hype.

A dating preference built around enormous semiconductor bonuses can change if profits change.

A university major selected because one industry appears unstoppable can look different several years later.

And a stock-market mania can reverse much faster than a career.

Seoul Is Doubling Down Anyway

South Korea’s government is not backing away from the AI bet.

The Lee Jae-myung administration has proposed a record 821 trillion won ($597 billion) budget for 2027, up 12.8% from 2026, with AI, semiconductor infrastructure and other future industries among its major priorities. A semiconductor-driven corporate-tax windfall is helping finance that expansion.

The country is also preparing enormous infrastructure investments. Government plans unveiled in June included an 800 trillion won semiconductor expansion and a 550 trillion won AI-data-center buildout, alongside efforts to commercialize physical AI.

The implication is clear.

Korea is betting that the AI boom is not just another technology cycle.

It is betting that it can reorganize industries, exports, infrastructure and employment around it.

And increasingly, Koreans appear to be reorganizing parts of their own lives around the same assumption.

The Bigger Question

For now, Samsung and SK Hynix employees becoming sought-after dating prospects makes for a fascinating cultural story.

A dating show featuring chip engineers makes for an even better viral headline.

And nearly nine out of ten undeclared engineering students at one elite university choosing an electronics-focused field is a powerful sign of changing aspirations.

But South Korea’s real AI experiment is much bigger.

The country is discovering what happens when the profits generated by one technological breakthrough become large enough to influence wealth, status, education, entertainment and employment at the same time.

The question is no longer whether AI can change the economy.

In South Korea, the harder question may be who gets lifted by that transformation — and who gets left competing with the machines.
