South Korean Officer Tried to Show Students a Taser — Then It Suddenly Fired and Hit a Teen

A routine encounter between a police officer and a group of curious middle school students in South Korea took a dangerous turn when a Taser was accidentally discharged during a demonstration, striking one student and sending him to the hospital.

The incident happened at around 4:30 p.m. on September 10 in a vacant lot in Daeso-eup, Eumseong County, North Chungcheong Province, according to police and multiple South Korean media reports.

The student was reportedly standing about 3 to 4 meters away when one of the device’s probes struck his thigh. Another probe grazed his arm.

Students reportedly asked to see the Taser

According to police accounts cited by Yonhap and other Korean outlets, the officer was returning from handling another call when he encountered roughly 10 middle school students.

The officer then attempted to demonstrate its stun function, which police said was intended to demonstrate the device without firing its probes.

But the weapon still had a probe cartridge attached, and the officer apparently did not realize it was loaded before triggering it. One probe struck the student in the thigh.

The Korea Herald reported that the officer was unaware that the cartridge containing the probes remained attached.

Teen initially went home before seeking treatment

The incident became even more controversial after the injured student was initially allowed to go home.

Police said the student did not show obvious symptoms at the scene and was advised to return home. He later developed pain and was hospitalized for treatment.

The student’s family has questioned why he was not taken to a hospital immediately after being struck.

YTN reported that the family said they were told there was no need for immediate hospital transport because they believed no electrical current had passed through the student’s body.

There is an important distinction in the reporting: police said the second probe merely grazed the student’s arm, meaning the two probes did not establish the circuit normally required for a full electrical discharge between them. The family has disputed aspects of what happened and raised concerns about the decision not to transport the student immediately.

Police are now conducting an internal investigation into how the incident occurred and whether the officer violated safety procedures. Possible disciplinary action is also being considered.

Authorities have also said they plan to conduct additional safety training to prevent similar incidents from happening again.

The episode has drawn attention to the importance of strict handling procedures for police equipment, particularly when members of the public—including minors—are nearby.

What began as a seemingly casual request from students to see police equipment quickly became a medical emergency.

The incident also raises questions about whether officers should conduct demonstrations of potentially dangerous equipment outside controlled training environments, particularly when young people are present.

A small demonstration with serious consequences

For the injured student and his family, what may have appeared to be a harmless demonstration became an unexpected hospital visit.

For police, the incident now presents a different problem: determining why a device intended to be demonstrated without firing its probes was able to discharge them in the first place.

The investigation will determine whether the officer breached established safety procedures and whether additional disciplinary measures are warranted.

Until then, the incident serves as a stark reminder that equipment designed for law enforcement can carry serious risks even when it is being handled during what appears to be a routine demonstration.
