The Philippines’ long-awaited return to men’s football at the Asian Games has become increasingly difficult after the U-23 national team suffered a 2-0 defeat to Vietnam on Friday, September 18, leaving the Filipinos without a point after two Group C matches.
Vietnam broke the deadlock in the second half through Nguyen Thanh Nhan in the 75th minute, before Nguyen Le Phat added a second goal late in the match to seal the victory. GMA News also reported the final score as 2-0, with the Philippines now at 0-2 in the group stage.
The result puts the Philippines in a difficult position in its bid to reach the knockout stage. Only the top two teams in Group C advance to the quarterfinals, meaning the Filipinos now need a strong result in their final group match against Kuwait while also depending on the outcome of the other matches in the group.
Vietnam breaks through after scoreless first half
The Philippines managed to keep Vietnam off the scoreboard during the opening half despite sustained pressure from the Southeast Asian side.
Vietnam controlled much of the early possession and repeatedly tried to create openings from the flanks. According to Vietnam’s VOV, the Philippines defended deep and remained compact, making it difficult for Vietnam to turn its possession into goals.
The breakthrough finally came in the 75th minute, when Thanh Nhan found the net to put Vietnam ahead.
The Philippines then had an opportunity to respond, but Vietnam eventually doubled its advantage in the 87th minute through Le Phat. The late goal effectively ended the Filipinos’ hopes of earning a point from the match.
A difficult start after 52-year absence
The defeat follows an even tougher opening match for the Philippines, which lost 5-1 to Uzbekistan on September 15.
The Filipinos initially remained competitive against Uzbekistan but struggled after midfielder Gavin Muens was sent off shortly after halftime. Uzbekistan subsequently pulled away to complete the 5-1 victory. The Philippine Football Federation said the team had competed closely with the Asian Games bronze medalist for significant portions of the match before the red card changed the contest.
That means the Philippines has conceded seven goals in its first two Group C matches while scoring just once.
The lone Philippine goal in the tournament so far came from Joshua Merino against Uzbekistan.
Kuwait now becomes a crucial final test
The Philippines will close its Group C campaign against Kuwait on September 22, with kickoff scheduled for 1 p.m. Philippine time at the CS Asset Minato Soccer Stadium in Nagoya.
Kuwait entered the tournament having drawn 1-1 with Vietnam in its opening match. Vietnamese media reported that Vietnam created numerous chances in that game but was unable to convert enough of them into goals.
The Philippines therefore faces a complicated final-round scenario. Its own result against Kuwait will be critical, but qualification also depends on the other Group C results because only two teams can advance.
Historic Asian Games return turns into a survival fight
Despite the difficult results, the campaign itself represents a major milestone for Philippine men’s football.
The U-23 side is competing in the Asian Games men’s football tournament for the first time since 1974, ending a 52-year absence. The Philippine Football Federation had highlighted the team’s progress over the previous year, including a historic semifinal appearance in the U-23 ASEAN Championship, a winning campaign in the AFC U-23 Asian Cup qualifiers and a semifinal appearance at the 2025 Southeast Asian Games.
Coach Garrath McPherson and the PFF had entered the tournament hoping the young squad could translate that progress onto the continental stage.
The Philippines was placed in a challenging Group C alongside Uzbekistan, Vietnam and Kuwait, with Uzbekistan entering the tournament as the 2022 Asian Games bronze medalist.
Now, after two defeats, the focus shifts entirely to the final group match.
The Philippines still has one game left—but its path beyond the group stage has become increasingly narrow.
