BANGKOK, Thailand — Thailand’s Parliament erupted into a heated confrontation after opposition MP Rakchanok Srinok, better known as “Ice,” raised concerns about possible political interference in the Department of Special Investigation (DSI), drawing angry protests from members of the ruling Bhumjaithai Party.
The clash unfolded on September 9 during Parliament’s third day of debate on Thailand’s FY2027 budget bill, as lawmakers examined the Ministry of Justice’s proposed budget of 16.437 billion baht.
Rakchanok, a party-list MP from the opposition Prachachon Party, questioned a 27-million-baht project to develop a system designed to trace financial transactions and analyse money trails in support of DSI investigations.
While acknowledging that the technology could help address the agency’s shortage of financial analysts, she raised a more politically explosive question:
Who would ultimately control the powerful investigative tools?
‘Ice’ Raises Fears Over DSI Independence
Rakchanok warned that sophisticated financial-tracing technology would be of little comfort if the agency responsible for using it was vulnerable to political influence.
Her comments reportedly referred to concerns surrounding a senior official who could potentially move into a leadership role at the DSI.
The remarks quickly triggered protests from Bhumjaithai MPs, turning what began as a budget debate into a fierce political confrontation on the floor of Parliament.
According to Thai Rath, Rakchanok’s comments focused on fears that the person overseeing the DSI’s use of the technology might not be sufficiently independent, particularly given the political sensitivity surrounding ongoing investigations.
Why the DSI Debate Has Become So Explosive
The confrontation comes against the backdrop of the highly sensitive investigation into alleged irregularities surrounding Thailand’s Senate election.

Prime Minister and Bhumjaithai Party leader Anutin Charnvirakul had previously said opposition MPs were fully entitled to scrutinise the government during the budget debate, while stressing that the budget process should not become a substitute for a no-confidence debate.
Anutin said MPs had the right to ask questions and that government agencies and parliamentary committees had a duty to provide explanations.
But the events of the past several days suggest the budget debate has become much more than a discussion about spending.
