METRO MANILA, Philippines — Motorists can take a break from Metro Manila’s number coding restrictions on Monday, August 31, 2026, as the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) suspends the implementation of the Expanded Unified Vehicular Volume Reduction Program in observance of National Heroes Day.
National Heroes Day, celebrated every last Monday of August, falls on August 31 this year and is listed as a regular holiday in the Philippines.
The suspension means vehicles covered by the number coding scheme will not be restricted based on their license plate numbers during the holiday.
The MMDA has consistently implemented the policy of automatically suspending number coding during regular and special non-working holidays. The agency followed the same practice during the recent observance of Ninoy Aquino Day on August 21, when the coding scheme was also lifted across Metro Manila.
A Long Weekend for Motorists—But Expect Heavy Traffic
With National Heroes Day creating a three-day weekend from August 29 to 31, motorists planning road trips or family outings are still advised to prepare for possible heavy traffic, particularly along major highways and routes leading to popular destinations.
While number coding will not be in effect on Monday, the suspension does not mean traffic rules are relaxed. Motorists are still required to comply with all other traffic regulations and local ordinances.
The MMDA’s number coding suspension provides added flexibility for private vehicle owners, but commuters and motorists should continue checking official traffic advisories before traveling, especially as holiday traffic volumes may increase.
For regular workdays, the Expanded Unified Vehicular Volume Reduction Program remains one of the traffic management measures used to help ease congestion across Metro Manila.
