Michael Sager Is Ready for His Biggest Love-Triangle Role Yet—But Who Will AZ Martinez Choose in ‘The Way Back to You’?

MANILA, Philippines — Michael Sager is getting ready to step into a complicated romantic story as he reunites with fellow former Pinoy Big Brother: Celebrity Collab Edition housemates AZ Martinez and Ralph De Leon for Viu’s upcoming original series, The Way Back to You.

The romantic comedy is already generating buzz even before production begins, with the three young stars at the center of a love triangle involving Julia (AZ), Tristan (Ralph), and Patrick (Michael). 

Sager recently told GMA News that he has started preparing for the role, including attending workshops to better understand and portray his character.

“That series really excites me.”

The actor said he is eager for audiences to see what he has been working on as the project moves closer to production. 

Michael Sager is taking the preparation seriously

While fans may already be anticipating the chemistry among the three leads, Sager’s latest comments reveal that the project is more than simply another reunion of familiar PBB faces.

The actor said he recently attended several workshops as part of his preparation for Patrick, suggesting that the upcoming role will require him to develop a character distinct from his previous projects. 

For viewers who followed the trio during Pinoy Big Brother: Celebrity Collab Edition, the casting creates an additional layer of interest: audiences already know the three actors from their time together, but this time they will be navigating an entirely fictional romantic conflict.

A love triangle built around first love and second chances

The Way Back to You centers on Julia, Tristan and Patrick as their lives become complicated when people and emotions from the past resurface.

The story is set in a fictional provincial town known for its onion farms, taking the romance away from the usual urban setting and placing the characters in a more intimate Filipino hometown environment. 

At the heart of the story is a familiar but emotionally loaded question: Can a first love still have a place in the life you’ve already built?

The series combines romantic comedy with drama, exploring relationships, family, coming home and the uncomfortable process of confronting people and memories that were supposed to have been left behind. 

The trio already has history on screen

The casting also brings together three actors who have previously shared connections through other projects.

AZ Martinez and Ralph De Leon previously appeared together in The Secrets of Hotel 88, while AZ and Michael Sager starred together in the digital film Opposites Almost Attract. 

That history could give the new series an additional advantage, particularly as fans are already familiar with different on-screen combinations involving the three leads.

The project marks a fresh opportunity, however, because all three will now be placed in the same central storyline.

More familiar faces are joining the cast

The cast extends beyond the three leads.

GMA News reported that Ashley Sarmiento, Marco Masa and Jenzel Angeles are also part of The Way Back to You, while Tuesday Vargas and other performers are joining the ensemble. The additional cast members were introduced during the project’s first story conference and script reading. 

Other entertainment outlets have likewise reported the reunion of the three former PBB housemates and the show’s romantic-comedy premise. 

JP Habac is behind the series

The series is being directed by filmmaker JP Habac, whose previous work includes the acclaimed romantic film I’m Drunk, I Love You.

Rein Entertainment is handling line production, while award-winning filmmaker and writer Shugo Praico serves as creative head. The combination points toward a project that intends to balance mainstream romance with a more grounded Filipino storytelling approach. 

The creative team’s involvement is particularly notable because The Way Back to You is being positioned not simply as a conventional love-triangle story, but as a narrative about relationships, family, identity and the complicated process of returning home.

When will ‘The Way Back to You’ premiere?

Production is scheduled to begin in September 2026, with the series expected to premiere on Viu in the fourth quarter of 2026. As of Sept. 12, no specific premiere date has been announced in the sources reviewed. 

That means fans still have some waiting to do—but anticipation is already building.

And with Michael Sager preparing for his role, AZ Martinez taking on Julia and Ralph De Leon playing Tristan, the biggest question may not be who ends up together.

It may be whether the past can really stay in the past when the three characters find their way back to one another.

Why this could be a major Viu romance

The series has several built-in ingredients for audience interest: three recognizable young actors, a love triangle, a hometown setting, former PBB connections and a creative team with experience in Filipino romantic storytelling.

But the biggest hook is arguably the tension between first love and present-day love.

That gives The Way Back to You room to move beyond the usual “who will she choose?” formula and explore what happens when people who have changed over time are forced to confront the feelings they once left behind.

For Sager, that means the upcoming series could become one of his more closely watched projects yet.

The cameras are about to roll. The love triangle is already set. Now fans are waiting to see who Julia, Tristan and Patrick will choose—and who gets left behind.
