Micah Shin Builds Four-Shot Lead at ICTSI Apo Golf Classic After Impressive 68

Micah Shin strengthened his bid for another Philippine Golf Tour championship after producing a second-round 68 to establish a commanding four-stroke lead at the International Container Terminal Services Inc. (ICTSI) Apo Golf Classic in Davao on Wednesday.

The Korean-American golfer posted a 12-under-par 132 total after two rounds at the Apo Golf and Country Club, putting himself in a strong position with 36 holes remaining in the tournament.

Shin’s performance was particularly impressive considering his difficult start. After opening with a few shaky holes, he recovered with a crucial birdie-par-eagle finish on his opening nine before maintaining his momentum throughout the round.

The result placed him firmly ahead of the chasing field as he pursued his second Philippine Golf Tour title of the season.

Shin previously captured the season-opening The Country Club Invitational in January, one of the tour’s major events.

Eagle on the 18th Restores Shin’s Momentum

Starting on the 10th hole, Shin opened with two consecutive pars before encountering trouble during a stretch of alternating birdies and bogeys.

His early mistakes allowed his closest challengers, Clyde Mondilla and Sean Ramos, to narrow the gap to just one stroke.

However, Shin responded at the right moment. He collected a birdie on the 16th hole, followed by a par on the 17th, before delivering the round’s defining moment on the par-five 18th.

With approximately 230 yards remaining, Shin struck a four-iron toward the green and set up an eagle opportunity. He then sank a putt from around 15 feet to complete the spectacular finish.

The eagle helped restore his advantage and gave him breathing room heading into the remainder of his round.

Shin admitted that his performance was not as sharp as he wanted, but credited his course management and ability to save par for keeping him ahead.

He also acknowledged that playing at Apo Golf and Country Club gave him additional confidence because he considers the venue his home course.

Mondilla and Ramos Lead the Chasing Pack

Clyde Mondilla, fresh from winning the South Pacific tournament the previous week, remained Shin’s closest challenger after recording a second consecutive 69.

Mondilla finished at six-under-par 138, four strokes behind the leader.

Sean Ramos occupied third place with a 139 total after also producing a 69.

Jeremy Tandoy and Kim Tae Soo shared fourth place at 140 after matching rounds of 70.

Jeffren Lumbo and Collin Wheeler joined Russell Bautista at 142, while Art Arbole, Angelo Que and amateur Alex Bisera were tied at 143.

The standings left several experienced players with opportunities to challenge Shin during the final two rounds.

Shin Eyes Second Philippine Golf Tour Title of the Season

Shin’s four-shot advantage gives him a significant opportunity to claim another championship, although he remained cautious about declaring himself the likely winner.

His familiarity with Apo Golf and Country Club has been a major advantage, allowing him to manage the course despite difficult stretches and changing conditions.

The golfer said he felt comfortable playing at the venue but acknowledged that he still needed to improve his ball-striking to maintain his position.

His performance also reflects the importance of course management in a tournament where experienced challengers remain capable of producing low scores.

A total of 45 players made the cut at 152, keeping the competition alive heading into the final 36 holes.

With Mondilla, Ramos and other contenders still within striking distance, Shin will need to sustain his composure and avoid costly mistakes if he hopes to convert his four-shot lead into another Philippine Golf Tour victory.
