BLACKPINK’s Lisa Opens a New Chapter in Acting as Documentary ‘Always Lalisa’ Reveals Her Journey to Independence

BLACKPINK’s Lisa Opens a New Chapter in Acting as Documentary ‘Always Lalisa’ Reveals Her Journey to Independence

BLACKPINK superstar Lisa is entering a new phase of her career, moving beyond her success as a K-pop performer to explore acting, independent music production and greater creative control over her future.

The Thai singer and rapper, whose real name is Lalisa Manobal, is the subject of the documentary Always Lalisa, which follows a pivotal period in her life as she establishes herself as a solo artist and makes her acting debut in HBO’s hit series The White Lotus.

Directed by Sue Kim, the documentary offers an unusually personal look at Lisa’s journey, including her childhood, family life, demanding K-pop training and efforts to discover her identity outside BLACKPINK.

The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival before receiving a limited theatrical release on October 12, 2026, ahead of its planned streaming availability on YouTube Premium.

At 29, Lisa describes the experience of building a solo career as both challenging and rewarding. After spending nearly a decade with BLACKPINK, she said pursuing independent projects forced her to develop confidence and make decisions she previously had little opportunity to explore.

From Strict K-pop Training to Creative Independence

Lisa’s journey began when she joined South Korean entertainment company YG Entertainment as a trainee at just 13 years old.

She became the company’s first non-Korean trainee after succeeding in an audition that attracted thousands of hopefuls. Her training involved years of singing, dancing and learning Korean before BLACKPINK officially debuted in 2016.

The documentary explores the demanding environment that shaped her early career, including restrictions that affected aspects of her personal life, such as dating, drinking and driving.

Lisa described her five years of training as similar to attending boarding school, where she lived in a dormitory with other aspiring performers who shared the same ambition.

Although she remains grateful for the opportunities and discipline that helped make her a global superstar, the film highlights how establishing independence became an important part of her personal development.

After years of working within a tightly managed entertainment system, Lisa began taking greater control of her music, business decisions and public identity.

She established her own management company, Lloud, in 2024, creating a platform for her individual projects and expanding her opportunities beyond BLACKPINK.

‘Alter Ego’ Marked a Major Step in Her Solo Career

One of the documentary’s central storylines is the development of Lisa’s first solo studio album, Alter Ego, released in 2025.

The project showcased different sides of her artistic personality as she experimented with multiple musical identities and explored how she wanted to present herself as an individual performer.

The album received mixed critical reactions, reflecting the challenges of establishing a distinct identity after becoming internationally famous as part of one of K-pop’s biggest groups.

Nevertheless, Lisa continued expanding her solo career through major international appearances, including performances at Coachella and the Academy Awards.

Her growing confidence is a major theme of Always Lalisa. The documentary captures her transition from an artist accustomed to following an established management structure to someone increasingly comfortable making independent creative decisions.

The film also includes appearances by her parents, offering viewers a closer look at the family background and personal experiences behind her public image.

‘The White Lotus’ Opens the Door to Acting

Lisa’s move into acting represents another major turning point.

She made her acting debut in the third season of HBO’s The White Lotus, which was set in Thailand. She played Mook, a resort employee whose relationship with a security guard becomes part of the season’s larger storyline.

Although Lisa had spent much of her life performing through singing and dancing, she acknowledged that acting was an entirely new challenge.

The documentary also reveals that series creator Mike White initially had reservations about casting a K-pop superstar in the production, concerned that the decision could be viewed as stunt casting.

However, after meeting Lisa, White became more confident in her suitability for the role.

Director Sue Kim said the experience allowed viewers to see Lisa testing her boundaries and discovering what she wanted from her career and personal life.

Her performance in The White Lotus has since helped introduce her to audiences beyond the K-pop industry, opening opportunities for more substantial film and television roles.

Netflix Projects Signal Bigger Acting Ambitions

Lisa is not treating acting as a one-time experiment.

Among her upcoming projects are a Netflix romantic comedy inspired by the 1999 film Notting Hill, written by Katie Silberman, and the South Korean action thriller Tygo, directed by Lee Sang-yong.

The two projects offer very different opportunities, allowing her to explore romantic comedy and action-oriented storytelling.

Lisa has expressed openness to different genres, saying she enjoys a wide range of films, although horror movies are not among her favorites.

Her growing filmography suggests that she intends to develop her acting career alongside her continuing music activities.

Lisa’s Journey Reflects a New Era Beyond BLACKPINK

Lisa’s transformation comes as she continues to balance her identity as a member of BLACKPINK with her ambitions as a solo performer, entrepreneur and actress.

Her global influence extends beyond music. She was also associated with the worldwide Labubu craze after being photographed carrying one of the collectible plush toys in 2024, demonstrating how even small details of her public appearances can influence international trends.

But Always Lalisa focuses on something more personal than celebrity influence: the process of growing into an independent artist after spending much of her youth in a highly structured entertainment industry.

For Lisa, the next chapter is about having the freedom to experiment, make mistakes and pursue opportunities that once seemed out of reach.

Her acting debut in The White Lotus may have introduced her to a new audience, but her upcoming Netflix projects suggest that her ambitions in film and television are only beginning.

With music, business and acting now forming major parts of her career, Lisa is gradually redefining what it means to be a global K-pop superstar beyond the stage.
