Metro Manila, Cavite and Rizal Residents Brace for Power Interruptions This Week—Is Your Area on the List?

MANILA, Philippines — Residents in several areas of Metro Manila, Cavite and Rizal are being advised to prepare for scheduled power interruptions this week as Manila Electric Company (Meralco) carries out maintenance and improvement works on parts of its distribution network.

The scheduled outages were announced on Sunday, September 13, with affected customers urged to check the specific maintenance schedule for their area and make the necessary preparations before the interruptions begin.

According to The Manila Times, the temporary power interruptions will affect selected areas in Metro Manila, Cavite and Rizal as maintenance activities are conducted on electricity facilities.

Meralco has explained that planned power interruptions are necessary to allow crews to carry out maintenance work, upgrade power lines and substations, relocate facilities when required by infrastructure projects, and construct or extend facilities to serve additional customers.

Unlike emergency brownouts caused by power shortages, severe weather or equipment failures, these scheduled interruptions are planned in advance and are intended to support maintenance and improvements to the power distribution system.

Why Are the Power Interruptions Happening?

Meralco said planned brownouts can be implemented for several reasons, including maintenance activities and upgrades to lines, substations and other power facilities.

The company also uses scheduled interruptions when facilities need to be relocated because of government infrastructure projects, such as road widening, or when new and expanded facilities are needed to accommodate additional customers.

Under its customer advisory guidelines, Meralco says consumers affected by planned interruptions are generally informed at least 72 hours before the scheduled service interruption.

The latest advisory is therefore different from the large-scale rotating brownouts experienced by consumers during previous Luzon grid alerts, which were caused by insufficient power reserves and generation deficiencies.

How to Check If Your Area Will Be Affected

Consumers in Metro Manila, Cavite and Rizal are encouraged to verify whether their barangay, street or subdivision is included in the latest maintenance schedule.

Meralco provides information on current and future power interruptions through its outage reporting and monitoring system. Customers can search for outages using their address or service account and view details about scheduled interruptions that may affect their location.

The utility also allows customers to receive outage advisories through SMS or email after registering their service and selecting their preferred notification settings.

For households and businesses that may be affected, preparing in advance can help reduce disruption, especially for people working from home, students attending online classes, establishments dependent on refrigeration or electronic equipment, and businesses operating during the scheduled outage period.

Residents Urged to Prepare

Affected consumers may want to charge essential devices and power banks, prepare emergency lighting, secure important electronic equipment and plan ahead for activities that depend heavily on electricity.

Meralco also advises customers experiencing an interruption that is not reflected in its outage information to submit a report through its website or mobile services.

As maintenance work continues across parts of Metro Manila and nearby provinces, residents are being reminded to stay updated because schedules and affected locations may vary depending on the specific work being carried out.

The key question for thousands of households now is simple: Will your area be among those temporarily left without electricity?

Consumers are urged to check the latest Meralco maintenance and outage advisories for the exact dates, times and locations of the scheduled interruptions.
