A 35-year-old man has been arrested after multiple people were injured in a knife attack at a shopping centre in Guangzhou, southern China.

The incident happened on Monday, Sept 14, in the Guangzhou University City area of Panyu district, with police receiving reports of people being attacked near a hotpot restaurant at about 5.20pm.

Several injured people were taken to hospital for treatment. Authorities said none of the victims suffered life-threatening injuries.

Suspect Arrested at Scene

The suspect, identified only by his surname Li, was detained by police after officers arrived at the scene.

Authorities said the case remains under investigation and have not disclosed a possible motive or confirmed the exact number of victims.

Online footage appeared to show a man wearing dark clothing and a face covering moving through the shopping centre before attacking a woman. Other footage showed injured people receiving assistance from members of the public.

Police have not confirmed all details shown in the videos circulating online.

Attack Sparks Panic at Shopping Centre

Videos shared online showed people fleeing as police entered the shopping centre.

Some images and videos also appeared to show victims with facial injuries, although the graphic material circulating online has not been independently verified in full.

Authorities have urged caution over unverified information as investigators work to establish exactly what happened.

Some reports circulating online claimed there may have been more than one attacker, but police have not confirmed those claims.

No Deaths Reported

The latest attack did not result in any reported deaths.

Police said the injured victims were transported to hospital and were not in life-threatening condition after receiving treatment.

The incident comes amid continuing concern in China over knife attacks in public places. In recent years, several high-profile attacks have raised questions about public safety and the challenges of preventing sudden acts of violence.

For now, investigators in Guangzhou are focusing on the circumstances surrounding Monday’s attack and the suspect’s motive.

The case remains under investigation.
