A 53-year-old man was arrested within four hours after a shop along Singapore’s East Coast Road was reportedly broken into, with about S$100 in cash stolen.
Police said they received a report at around 1.40pm on Sept. 19 about the alleged housebreaking and theft. Officers from the Bedok Police Division and Police Operations Command Centre then used follow-up investigations, police camera images and CCTV footage to establish the suspect’s identity.
The man was arrested within four hours of the report and was scheduled to be charged in court on Sept. 21 with housebreaking and theft under Section 451 of Singapore’s Penal Code 1871. If convicted, the offence carries a maximum sentence of 10 years’ imprisonment and a fine.
The case highlights how quickly police surveillance footage and CCTV evidence can assist investigations. Authorities said the suspect was identified through a combination of follow-up investigations and images captured by police cameras and the shop’s surveillance system.
Police have also reminded shop owners and members of the public to take precautions when leaving premises unattended. These include securing doors, roller shutters, windows and other access points with good-quality grilles and closed-shackle padlocks.
Authorities also advised against keeping large amounts of cash or valuable items inside unattended premises. Burglar alarms, motion-sensor lights and CCTV cameras can provide additional protection, particularly around potential entry points.
The investigation and court proceedings will determine the outcome of the case. For now, the incident serves as another reminder that even a relatively small amount of stolen cash can trigger a rapid police response when surveillance evidence helps investigators identify a suspect.
