A 23-year-old Malaysian man who was reported missing after leaving work for lunch in Johor Bahru was later found dead, leaving his family searching for answers over what happened in the final hours of his life.
The case came to public attention after his mother, Qiqi Tan, appealed for help on Facebook when her son, identified as Junying, failed to return after going out for lunch on Aug. 20.
According to Mothership, Tan said her son left his workplace in Johor Bahru at around 1 p.m. for lunch and then suddenly became unreachable. His phone was also offline.
His last conversation with his mother was reportedly at around 1:53 p.m. She said he sounded normal at the time.
The family subsequently reported him missing.
Police confirmed body was found in Johor Bahru
Malaysian media outlet Sin Chew Daily reported that police later confirmed Junying’s body had been found at an apartment building in Johor Bahru.
His mother’s subsequent Facebook posts revealed the family’s shock and grief.
Tan described her son as thoughtful, ambitious, gentle and well-mannered. She said there had been no apparent family dispute or debt problem before he disappeared and that he had gone to work normally that morning.
She also reflected on how their relationship had changed after her son began dating.
According to Tan, the two had once regularly talked about everyday matters, but she later realized they had become more distant as he devoted more time to his relationship.
Mother reveals breakup before his disappearance
The circumstances surrounding Junying’s relationship became another focus of the family’s search for answers.
Speaking to Sin Chew Daily, Tan said she learned that her son had broken up with his girlfriend on the morning of Aug. 20.
She believed the breakup may have affected him deeply.
However, it is important to distinguish between what the family suspects and what authorities have officially established. The available reports do not establish that the breakup was definitively the sole reason for his death.
Mothership reported that Tan suspected her son could not accept the breakup and believed this may have contributed to his decision. Police, meanwhile, confirmed the discovery of his body.
A mother’s unanswered questions
In emotional social-media posts following her son’s death, Tan questioned why the 23-year-old would choose to end his life when, in her words, he appeared to have so much ahead of him.
She said he had a car, a home, abilities and talents, and was regarded by others as a kind and polite young man.
Her posts also reflected a painful realization: despite living and working within the same family business, mother and son had gradually become less connected.
Tan said she went through their previous messages and realized they no longer shared the small details of their daily lives as they once had.
For a grieving parent, those unanswered questions can be especially difficult.
A reminder that emotional distress can be difficult to see
The tragedy also highlights how difficult it can be for families and friends to recognize what another person may be experiencing internally.
Someone can appear to be functioning normally—going to work, speaking with family and carrying on with everyday routines—while privately struggling with intense emotional pain.
That is why mental-health professionals generally encourage people experiencing overwhelming distress to seek support rather than facing it alone.
The circumstances surrounding Junying’s death remain deeply personal to his family, and the reports currently available provide only part of the picture.
What is known is that a young man disappeared after lunch on Aug. 20, his family urgently searched for him, and police later confirmed that his body had been found in Johor Bahru.
For his mother, however, the most painful question may remain the simplest one:
