Lewis Hamilton has delivered a striking verdict on the 2026 Formula One title race: Kimi Antonelli and Mercedes may simply be unstoppable.
The seven-time world champion admitted that his own championship hopes are effectively over after another dominant performance from Antonelli at the Spanish Grand Prix in Madrid, where the young Italian continued a remarkable season that is rapidly turning into one of Formula One’s biggest stories.
Antonelli, who replaced Hamilton at Mercedes after the 2024 season, claimed his eighth victory in 14 races and strengthened his grip on the Drivers’ Championship. Hamilton, meanwhile, was forced to retire early because of brake problems, leaving him facing an enormous points deficit with the season entering its decisive stages.
Antonelli Tightens His Grip on F1 Championship
At just 20 years old, Antonelli has emerged as the dominant force of the 2026 Formula One season.
His latest victory extended his championship lead to 101 points over Hamilton, while Mercedes teammate George Russell is 81 points behind. Reuters reported that Antonelli has now won eight of the first 14 races and led the championship through 13 consecutive rounds.
The numbers have become increasingly difficult for his rivals to ignore.
Antonelli recently became the first Italian driver since 1966 to win the Italian Grand Prix at Monza, delivering an emotional home victory after fighting his way from 19th on the grid. Formula One described the win as a full-circle moment in the young driver’s career, particularly after his difficult debut at the circuit two years earlier.
That victory was also another powerful reminder that Antonelli is no longer simply Formula One’s exciting young talent.
He is now the man everyone else is chasing.
Hamilton: Mercedes Are Performing at Another Level
Hamilton has repeatedly praised his former team throughout the season.
Earlier in July, the Ferrari driver described Mercedes as a phenomenal team and acknowledged the extraordinary level at which Antonelli and the Silver Arrows were performing. His comments this weekend went even further, with Hamilton effectively conceding that Antonelli’s championship advantage may now be too large to overcome.
The irony is impossible to miss.
Hamilton left Mercedes for Ferrari in search of a new chapter and a potential record-breaking eighth world championship. The driver who took his place, however, is now leading the sport’s most dominant title charge.
Antonelli has not only filled one of Formula One’s biggest seats.
He may be on the verge of making it his own.
Even George Russell Has Accepted the Reality
Hamilton is not the only driver beginning to accept Antonelli’s commanding position.
Mercedes teammate George Russell, Antonelli’s closest challenger in the standings, admitted after the Spanish Grand Prix that he is no longer realistically fighting for the world championship.
Russell trails Antonelli by 81 points and has shifted his focus toward maximizing individual race results rather than mounting an increasingly difficult title challenge.
That development could prove especially significant for Mercedes.
With Antonelli holding such a substantial lead, the team can increasingly focus on protecting its championship position and ensuring its young star continues scoring consistently.
Mercedes also holds a commanding 145-point advantage over Ferrari in the Constructors’ Championship, putting the team in a powerful position on both fronts.
But Mercedes Have Not Been Perfect
Despite their dominance, the season has not been without problems.
Antonelli suffered a painful late retirement at the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix earlier this year when he was running strongly, while Mercedes boss Toto Wolff openly criticized the team’s reliability issues.
Wolff said the situation was “not good enough” after Mercedes suffered mechanical problems affecting its drivers during crucial races.
Antonelli himself has also previously warned that Mercedes cannot afford to become complacent.
After his Belgian Grand Prix victory, he stressed the importance of taking every opportunity because the championship picture can change quickly in Formula One.
And as recently as August, Antonelli acknowledged that Mercedes might no longer have the outright fastest car after McLaren introduced significant improvements.
Yet that may be what makes his current title charge even more impressive.
Even when Mercedes has not appeared to have the fastest package, Antonelli has continued finding ways to win.
Can Anyone Still Stop Antonelli?
Max Verstappen and Lando Norris have also acknowledged the scale of Antonelli’s challenge, while Norris saw a potential Spanish Grand Prix victory disappear after the timing of a Virtual Safety Car worked against him.
Norris had started from pole and built a significant lead before the strategy situation changed the race, allowing Antonelli and Verstappen to gain ground. Antonelli eventually secured another crucial victory as Norris finished third.
With eight or nine races potentially remaining, depending on calendar developments, there are still enough points available for dramatic changes.
But Antonelli’s rivals now face a brutal reality:
They may no longer be racing to catch him.
They may be racing simply to prevent his lead from becoming even bigger.
A New Formula One Superstar?
The 2026 season could become the moment Formula One officially witnesses a changing of the guard.
Hamilton remains one of the greatest drivers in the sport’s history. But the man who replaced him at Mercedes is now on the verge of writing his own chapter.
Antonelli has already won eight races this season, taken Formula One by storm and established a massive championship advantage over some of the biggest names on the grid.
If he continues at this pace, the 20-year-old Italian could become the youngest Formula One world champion in history.
And judging by Hamilton’s latest assessment, even one of the greatest champions the sport has ever seen believes stopping Antonelli may now be almost impossible.
The biggest question is no longer whether Kimi Antonelli can win the 2026 Formula One World Championship.
It’s whether anyone can stop him before he does.
