KOTA TINGGI, JOHOR — What began as a routine police stop turned into a 50km high-speed chase through Johor early Saturday morning, ending with two men arrested and drugs believed to be methamphetamine seized from their vehicle.
The dramatic incident happened at around 12.35am on Sept. 12, when officers from the Mobile Patrol Vehicle (MPV) Unit of the Kota Tinggi District Police Headquarters ordered a Proton Wira to stop along Jalan Tun Sri Lanang in Bandar Kota Tinggi.
Instead of pulling over, the driver allegedly accelerated away and drove recklessly, prompting police to give chase.
According to Kota Tinggi police chief Supt Yusof Othman, the pursuit continued for roughly 50 kilometres, heading from Kota Tinggi towards Ulu Tiram before eventually coming to an end at KM31.5 of Jalan Johor Bahru-Mersing, near the Taman Sri Saujana traffic lights.
Police managed to stop the vehicle and arrest the two men inside, aged 33 and 44.
Videos of the arrest later circulated on social media, showing police officers surrounding the vehicle and moving in to apprehend the suspects as traffic built up around the area.
Further checks of the vehicle and the two men reportedly led to the discovery of drugs believed to be methamphetamine, commonly known as crystal meth or “syabu” in Malaysia.
Both suspects also tested positive for methamphetamine during drug screening, police said.
Investigators subsequently discovered that the two men were allegedly wanted in connection with previous narcotics-related offences.
The suspects have been remanded for four days, until Sept. 15, to assist police with their investigation.
Police investigating under several laws
The case is being investigated under Section 15(1)(a) and Section 12(2) of Malaysia’s Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, as well as Section 186 of the Penal Code, according to police.
Section 186 concerns voluntarily obstructing a public servant in the discharge of their public functions.
The incident has attracted attention online because of footage showing the tense arrest following the lengthy pursuit. The chase also highlights the risks faced by police and other road users when motorists allegedly refuse to stop and continue driving recklessly.
However, authorities have not indicated that the two men have been convicted of the offences. They remain suspects while investigations continue.
The case is the latest drug-related incident to draw attention in Johor, where police have continued conducting operations against narcotics activity across the state.
