MANILA, Philippines — Joy Barcoma is stepping away from Dogshow Divas, ending—for now—one of the podcast’s most talked-about hosting combinations just months after her guest appearances turned into a recurring role alongside Baus Rufo.
The former beauty queen and television host said she was making the decision as a way of protecting her peace, according to a GMA News report on her announcement.
But Barcoma’s exit lands in the middle of a much bigger story surrounding Dogshow Divas: months of debate among listeners over who should host the increasingly popular podcast, repeated absences by original co-host Macoy Dubs because of other commitments, and an online tendency to pit the show’s personalities against one another.
And remarkably, the controversy once ran in the exact opposite direction.
Joy Barcoma Was Never Supposed to Replace Macoy Dubs
When Barcoma first began appearing more frequently on Dogshow Divas, some fans enjoyed her chemistry with Rufo so much that they publicly suggested she permanently replace Macoy Dubs.
That prompted Macoy himself to address the issue in July.
After a Reddit user proposed making Barcoma Baus Rufo’s permanent co-host, Macoy joked about the suggestion but also made clear that he and Joy were not feuding.
He explained that both were simply busy pursuing their respective careers and urged supporters not to elevate one personality by wishing something bad for another.
Barcoma also directly rejected the replacement narrative.
“I was never meant to replace Mama Macoy,” she wrote at the time, according to Manila Bulletin, emphasizing that Macoy and Baus were the original Dogshow Divas. Rufo likewise criticized attacks against Barcoma and fellow recurring personality Tuesday Vargas that were being presented as support for the original duo.
That distinction matters now.
Barcoma was not introduced as Macoy’s permanent successor. GMA reported in March that she initially came aboard as a guest host for two episodes while Macoy was unavailable. She had already appeared on the podcast as a guest the previous month.
What happened afterward was largely driven by chemistry and audience response.
From Guest Host to One of the Podcast’s Most Recognizable Faces
Barcoma’s partnership with Rufo quickly became visible well beyond the podcast studio.
By June, GMA Regional TV described Rufo and Barcoma as “partners-in-vibes,” noting that the pair were also appearing together on Unang Hirit and The People Have Spoken.
Barcoma recalled that her first Dogshow Divas appearance clicked almost immediately despite it being the first time she and Rufo had met and worked closely together.
Rufo, for his part, described Barcoma as both a collaborator and friend.
The podcast itself increasingly rotated personalities depending on schedules.
Episode listings show Barcoma appearing repeatedly with Rufo through May, June, July and August, sometimes alongside Vargas and other guests. The August 19 episode featuring Nadine Lustre was hosted by Rufo and Barcoma, while the August 29 episode returned to the original Baus Rufo-Macoy Dubs pairing.
That changing lineup became part of the show’s appeal—but also one of its biggest sources of audience friction.
The Fan Debate Flipped
At first, some viewers were demanding more Joy and questioning Macoy’s absences.
Later, another segment of the audience began demanding more of the original Baus-and-Macoy tandem and criticizing Barcoma’s increasingly frequent appearances.
Recent Reddit discussions show listeners arguing over Barcoma’s hosting style, her laugh, the frequency of her appearances and whether Dogshow Divas should remain centered on its original two hosts.
Those comments should not automatically be treated as the proven cause of Barcoma’s decision. Reddit posts are audience reaction, not evidence of her private motivations.
But they demonstrate the unusually intense scrutiny that had developed around the podcast’s lineup before she announced she was stepping away.
That makes Barcoma’s choice of words—protecting her peace—particularly significant.
The creator who entered the show as a temporary substitute eventually found herself caught between two competing groups of viewers: those who once wanted her to replace Macoy, and those who later complained that she was appearing too often.
Her Career Is Already Moving Beyond ‘Dogshow Divas’
Stepping away from the podcast does not mean Barcoma is disappearing from entertainment.
The 2025 Miss Philippines Earth titleholder has steadily expanded beyond pageantry into hosting, television and digital entertainment.
PEP reported in August that Barcoma no longer planned to enter another beauty pageant after her reign, saying she believed she could continue using her voice and platform even outside competitions.
Her chemistry with Rufo has also generated opportunities separate from Dogshow Divas.
An upcoming September 6 event at the Glorietta Activity Center still lists Joy Barcoma and Baus Rufo among its featured guests. The promotional material identifies them with DogShow Divas, although the listing may have been prepared before Barcoma announced that she was stepping away from the podcast.
That distinction could become important in the days ahead.
What Happens to ‘Dogshow Divas’ Now?
The podcast itself remains identified on distribution platforms as a show from Baus Rufo and Macoy Dubs, reinforcing that the original tandem has always remained at its core.
What Barcoma added was another dynamic—one that became popular enough to generate calls for her permanent inclusion and divisive enough to later make her presence a recurring subject of online debate.
Her decision therefore raises a larger question for Dogshow Divas as its hosts become increasingly busy outside the podcast.
Can the show continue rotating personalities when schedules demand it without every new combination turning into a competition among fans?
Macoy had already offered what may be the clearest answer months ago: supporting one person should not require bringing another one down.
For Barcoma, however, the debate appears to have reached the point where stepping away is the choice she wants to make.
Whether that proves to be a permanent farewell, a temporary break, or simply the beginning of another chapter in her fast-expanding hosting career remains the unanswered part of the story.
