MANILA — Get Ready for Westerberg High
Manila theater fans are getting a major new production in 2027 as the internationally acclaimed “Heathers the Musical” officially heads to the Philippines for the first time.
The stage musical will run from January 21 to February 7, 2027, at The Theatre at Solaire in Parañaque City, presented by GMG Productions in association with Bill Kenwright Ltd. and Paul Taylor-Mills.
But one detail is already generating plenty of excitement among Filipino theater fans:
Filipina performer Gerardine Sacdalan will play Veronica Sawyer.
Sacdalan is currently playing Veronica in the UK production and has previously performed as Juliet in the UK tour of & Juliet. She was also nominated for Best Professional Debut at the 10th anniversary WhatsOnStage Awards.
A Filipina Takes Center Stage
Sacdalan’s casting gives the Manila production a particularly strong Filipino connection.
She will lead the production as Veronica Sawyer, the student at the heart of the story whose desire for popularity pulls her into the dangerous world of Westerberg High.
She will be joined by:
- Louis Hearsey as Jason “J.D.” Dean
- Liberty Stottor as Heather Chandler
- Jessica Ibadin as Heather Duke
- Lou Henry as Heather McNamara
The wider company includes Veronica Carabai, Sophie Manners, Markus Södergren, Beau Jackson, John Gurdían, Reuben Browne and other performers.
What Is ‘Heathers the Musical’ About?
Based on the 1989 cult classic film starring Winona Ryder and Christian Slater, Heathers the Musical follows Veronica Sawyer, an ordinary student desperate to escape the brutal social hierarchy of high school.
Her life changes when she is accepted into the school’s elite clique — the three Heathers.
Suddenly, Veronica has the popularity and social status she always wanted.
Then she meets J.D., a mysterious and rebellious student whose influence pushes the story into increasingly dangerous territory.
The musical explores popularity, friendship, identity, peer pressure and the consequences of trying to fit into a toxic social hierarchy.
And despite its dark subject matter, the production is known for combining that material with sharp comedy and an energetic musical score.
Expect the Songs Fans Already Know
Fans of the musical can expect songs including:
“Candy Store,” “Seventeen,” “Dead Girl Walking,” “Meant to Be Yours” and “I Say No.”
The musical features a book, music and lyrics by Kevin Murphy and Laurence O’Keefe.
The Manila production is directed by Andy Fickman, with choreography by Gary Lloyd.
From Cult Film to International Stage Hit
The musical first premiered in Los Angeles in 2013 before transferring to New York’s New World Stages in 2014.
A reimagined London production opened in 2018 with new songs and an updated script, helping propel the show into multiple West End seasons and UK and Ireland tours.
The production has also traveled internationally, including runs in New York, London and Australia.
The show won the 2019 WhatsOnStage Award for Best New Musical, further cementing its place among the major contemporary musical-theater productions.
When Do Tickets Go on Sale?
Filipino fans won’t have to wait much longer to secure seats.

A Show With a Serious Content Warning
Despite its colorful, pop-inspired presentation, Heathers is not a conventional feel-good high-school musical.
The Manila production is recommended for audiences aged 14 and above and contains mature themes involving murder, suicide, sexual violence and references to eating disorders, as well as strong language.
The production also uses haze, loud noises including gunshot effects, flashing lights and strobe effects.
That warning is particularly important for parents and younger theatergoers considering the show.
Why the Manila Debut Matters
For Filipino theater audiences, the arrival of Heathers represents more than another international musical.
The Manila run brings a globally recognized production to a local audience while placing a Filipina performer at the center of the story.
With Sacdalan leading the cast, the Philippines will get its own Veronica Sawyer while audiences experience a production that has already built a following across major theater markets.
And with the show’s dark humor, recognizable songs and controversial subject matter, Westerberg High may become one of Manila’s most talked-about theater destinations early next year.
