TAMPAKAN, South Cotabato, Philippines — For many students in the remote communities of Barangay Pula Bato, getting an education once came with a challenge that began long before the first class bell rang: finding enough money for the daily trip to school.
Now, a free school bus is helping change that reality.
Elementary and high school students from marginalized families in Pula Bato, Tampakan are being transported to and from school at no cost through a partnership between the barangay government and Sagittarius Mines Inc. (SMI), according to a report by Philstar.com.
For families living on limited incomes, the impact can be significant. Bus driver Arjay Leop said many of the students come from households that depend on farming, livestock raising, construction and farm labor, or tricycle driving to make ends meet.
The alternative is costly. Barangay officials and Leop said a student could spend at least P120 a day on public transportation for a round trip between home and school.
For a family struggling to cover food, school supplies and other basic needs, that daily expense can quickly become a major burden.
What may seem like a simple bus ride is helping remove one of the barriers that can keep children from getting to school.
The project primarily benefits children from the indigenous Blaan community and other settler families living in and around the area. The bus travels during school days, giving learners a more reliable way to reach public elementary and high schools.
Leop, who has driven the school bus for several years, said serving the students has become a source of personal fulfillment.
But the vehicle’s role may extend beyond education.
South Cotabato officials have noted that the bus can also be used for emergency response operations, adding another layer of value for communities where access and transportation can be challenging.
The story comes as student welfare and school access remain important concerns across the region. Recent reports have also highlighted efforts by local education and government officials in South Cotabato and nearby areas to strengthen support systems for learners, from school safety initiatives to assistance for underserved children.
In Barangay Pula Bato, however, the difference is measured in something far more immediate: a child getting on a bus in the morning and arriving at school without a parent having to choose between transportation fare and another essential household expense.
For these students, the ride may be free—but its value reaches far beyond the road.
A simple school bus is giving children a better chance to stay in school, while giving struggling families one less expense to worry about. And in a remote community where every peso matters, that could make all the difference.
