TAIPEI, Taiwan — Travelers flying with EVA Air could soon pay significantly more for extra luggage after the Taiwanese carrier announced that it will raise excess baggage fees and revise several other international baggage charges starting Sept. 29.

The airline said the changes are being introduced in response to higher fuel prices and rising global operating costs, with the new rates applying to international flights with travel dates on or after Sept. 29.

The revised policy will affect charges for excess baggage, prepaid excess baggage, overweight and oversized luggage, as well as fees for transporting pets and sports equipment.

Extra Bags Could Cost Up to US$390

Under the new fee structure, passengers traveling to and from Taiwan will see the cost of an additional checked bag rise by between US$20 and US$90 per piece, depending on the route.

Charges for an extra checked bag will range from US$160 to US$390, compared with the previous range of US$140 to US$300.

The increase means travelers on some long-haul routes could face substantially higher costs if they exceed their free baggage allowance.

EVA Air Divides International Routes Into Five Zones

EVA Air’s revised baggage fees are based on a five-zone international network.

Zone 1 includes Japan, South Korea, the Philippines, China, Hong Kong, Macau, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Vietnam and Cambodia.

Zone 2 covers Australia, New Zealand, Guam, Palau, India and other Asian destinations not included in Zone 1 or Taiwan.

Zone 3 includes Los Angeles, Seattle, San Francisco, Vancouver, Hawaii and destinations in the Middle East.

Zone 4 covers other parts of North America, Europe including Turkey, Africa and Russia.

Zone 5 includes Central and South America.

The final amount passengers pay will depend on their destination and the type and weight of the additional baggage.

More Changes Beyond Excess Baggage

The changes will not be limited to passengers checking an extra suitcase.

EVA Air is also revising charges involving prepaid baggage, overweight luggage and oversized items.

Passengers traveling with pets or sports equipment could also see changes under the updated international baggage policy.

The airline has advised travelers to review the new baggage rules carefully before purchasing additional baggage or arriving at the airport with luggage exceeding their ticket allowance.
