DIPOLOG CITY, Zamboanga del Norte — Science and technology took center stage in the Zamboanga Peninsula as the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) brought its latest innovations closer to students, businesses and communities through the 2026 Regional Science, Technology, and Innovation Week (RSTW).
Held from August 12 to 14 at the Zamboanga del Norte Convention and Sports Center, the regional celebration featured interactive exhibits, competitions, technology demonstrations and forums focused on some of the Philippines’ most pressing challenges—including food security, sustainable development and disaster resilience.
Among the attractions were the DOST Mobile Planetarium, weather and climate technologies, robotics exhibits and student innovations from the Philippine Science High School–Zamboanga Peninsula Region Campus.
For students, the event offered more than a glimpse of new technology. It provided an opportunity to see how science and innovation can be applied to real-world problems.
The RSTW also featured the Sci-Math Battle 2026, bringing together students from 12 private schools to test their knowledge and skills in science and mathematics while encouraging greater interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).
DOST investments already producing economic impact
Behind the exhibits is a much larger government push to use science and technology as tools for regional development.
During the Zamboanga RSTW opening, DOST Secretary Renato Solidum Jr. highlighted investments in research, human capital, partnerships and innovation ecosystems across the region.
According to figures cited by DOST and reported by the Daily Tribune, government-backed science and technology interventions in the Zamboanga Peninsula totaled nearly P245 million.
These included 57 Small Enterprise Technology Upgrading Program (SET-UP) projects, 40 Grants-in-Aid projects and 31 Community Empowerment through Science and Technology (CEST) initiatives.
DOST said these interventions helped create more than 4,200 jobs, improve enterprise productivity and enable assisted firms to generate over P1.12 billion in cumulative gross sales.
That makes the RSTW more than a traditional science fair. It is also a showcase of how government-funded research, technology adoption and innovation programs can translate into economic opportunities at the community level.
From laboratories to farms
Agriculture was another major focus of the Zamboanga celebration.
The Regional Forum on Innovative and Climate-Resilient Agriculture Technologies showcased technologies designed to help farmers respond to changing environmental and production conditions.
Featured solutions included agricultural robotics, irrigation systems, biological pest control and digital tools for detecting pests and diseases.
The emphasis reflects a broader direction for DOST’s regional programs: using science not simply to develop new inventions, but to solve practical problems involving food production, climate resilience and livelihoods.
Science, technology and the digital economy
The Zamboanga RSTW also included discussions and activities covering the blue economy, trade and tourism, food and nutrition innovations, agriculture and natural resources, technology commercialization, chemical safety and digital security for businesses.
The program culminated with activities for cybersafe micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), highlighting the growing importance of digital security and business resilience as companies become increasingly dependent on technology.
The opening program also featured the inauguration of the Dipolog City Science Centrum and satellite calibration laboratory, as well as the groundbreaking for the 3D-printed “Rizal: El Dapitanon” monument, adding cultural and educational dimensions to the regional technology showcase.
RSTW is happening across the country
The Zamboanga Peninsula event is part of DOST’s broader 2026 Regional Science, Technology, and Innovation Week program.
DOST’s official NSTW platform describes RSTW as a mechanism for bringing science and innovation closer to communities and addressing region-specific concerns through science- and technology-based interventions. The national program is designed to connect communities, industry, academe, government and development partners while promoting technology adoption, collaboration and inclusive growth.
Other regions have also placed their own priorities under the RSTW banner.
In Central Visayas, for example, the 2026 celebration highlighted areas including artificial intelligence, sustainable energy, technology transfer, startups, MSME development and future industries.
In Northern Mindanao, the RSTW in Camiguin focused on science, technology and digital innovation as tools for food security, sustainable energy and national resilience, with particular attention to island communities.
Meanwhile, DOST-NCR held its 2026 RSTW in Valenzuela City, showcasing Filipino technologies and innovations while promoting smart and sustainable communities. Its program included interactive exhibits, technology bazaars, science competitions, research and technology forums, and initiatives involving advanced manufacturing and innovation hubs.
Why the Zamboanga push matters
For communities outside major urban centers, access to advanced scientific facilities, research opportunities and technology networks can be limited.
That is why bringing these programs directly to regional communities can have a bigger impact than simply displaying new inventions.
The Zamboanga RSTW demonstrated how science can intersect with education, agriculture, entrepreneurship, digital security, disaster preparedness and local economic development.
For students, it can spark interest in STEM careers. For farmers, it can introduce tools that improve productivity and resilience. For MSMEs, technology assistance can help businesses become more competitive. And for communities facing climate and disaster risks, science-based information and technologies can strengthen preparedness.
The larger message from DOST’s 2026 RSTW campaign is clear: science is not meant to remain inside laboratories or universities—it is increasingly being positioned as a practical tool for solving problems where Filipinos live and work.
