China’s Giant WZ-X Stealth Drone Finally Takes Shape in New Photos—But What Is Beijing Building?

BEIJING — New photographs are giving military analysts their clearest look yet at a huge Chinese unmanned aircraft that could become an important part of Beijing’s next-generation intelligence and surveillance capabilities.

The aircraft, unofficially dubbed “WZ-X” by military observers, appears to be a massive tailless flying-wing drone undergoing flight testing in China. New imagery circulating online has revealed previously unclear details of its unusual wing configuration, including a distinctive stepped or shallowly serrated trailing edge.

The development is attracting attention because of the aircraft’s extraordinary size and apparent low-observable design.

A drone roughly the width of a B-2

According to assessments by defense analysts, the WZ-X has an estimated wingspan of approximately 52 to 53 meters, putting it in roughly the same wingspan class as the US B-2 Spirit stealth bomber.

Janes estimates the aircraft at about 13 meters long, although dimensions remain estimates because China has not officially released specifications for the aircraft.

The aircraft was first identified through commercial satellite imagery in May 2025 at the People’s Liberation Army Air Force’s Malan test facility in Xinjiang.

At the time, analysts could not determine whether unusual breaks in the aircraft’s wing outline were genuine design features or simply artifacts of satellite imagery.

New photographs appearing in September 2026 have provided a much clearer answer.

The strange wing design is real

The latest imagery shows a broad central section that transitions into long, considerably narrower outer wings.

Rather than following the smooth taper seen on conventional flying-wing aircraft, the WZ-X appears to have a pronounced change in wing chord, creating a distinctive “step-down” or shallow sawtooth appearance toward the outer sections.

That detail matters because the shape of a stealth aircraft is closely linked to how it manages radar reflections.

Analysts believe the WZ-X’s overall configuration is consistent with a low-observable, high-altitude, long-endurance unmanned aircraft, although exactly how effective its stealth characteristics are cannot be determined from publicly available photographs.

What is China using it for?

This is where the biggest questions remain.

Janes assesses that the aircraft is likely being developed primarily for long-range intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) missions. The aircraft’s size, flying-wing configuration and apparent design emphasis on endurance support that assessment.

Analyst Andreas Rupprecht has gone further, describing the aircraft as a possible strategic high-altitude, long-endurance ISR platform capable of operating deep inside contested airspace and potentially serving as a communications relay.

But those capabilities remain analytical assessments—not confirmed specifications from Beijing.

There has also been speculation about a possible strike role. However, Janes specifically notes that an additional strike capability cannot currently be confirmed from the available imagery.

That distinction is important.

Calling the WZ-X a “spy drone” is therefore a convenient description of its likely ISR role, but “WZ-X” itself is not a confirmed official designation, and neither its exact mission nor operational capabilities have been publicly disclosed by China.

Why the WZ-X is different from China’s other stealth drones

The aircraft also appears substantially different from China’s CH-7, another large flying-wing unmanned aircraft.

Janes says the WZ-X has a much longer wingspan and a different central-body configuration, while the CH-7 has a smaller and deeper center section. The CH-7 reportedly conducted its first flight in December 2025.

The emergence of both aircraft points to a broader Chinese push toward large, low-observable unmanned platforms.

The War Zone has also reported satellite imagery showing multiple large flying-wing aircraft at the Malan facility, highlighting the increasing activity surrounding China’s advanced unmanned-aircraft programs.

From satellite image to flight testing

The WZ-X story has moved rapidly.

The aircraft was initially visible only through satellite imagery at the remote Malan facility. Later imagery provided additional clues about its configuration, while photographs circulated online in September 2026 appear to show the aircraft airborne.

Janes describes the latest imagery as evidence that the aircraft has entered flight trials. The photographs also appear to show the aircraft’s landing gear extended, while analysts have identified possible split control surfaces on the outer wings.

The South China Morning Post reported that the latest photographs offer the clearest view yet of the aircraft’s serrated trailing edge and said the original source and exact location of the photographs had not been independently verified.

That caveat is critical when assessing images emerging from Chinese social-media platforms.

Why this matters beyond China

A large, stealth-oriented, high-altitude UAV could potentially provide China with another way to collect information over extremely large areas while reducing the exposure of crewed aircraft.

A platform designed for long endurance could potentially support missions such as:

  • Long-range intelligence collection
  • Maritime surveillance
  • Communications relay
  • Wide-area reconnaissance
  • Tracking of military activity
  • Support for other aircraft and unmanned systems

However, none of these potential capabilities should be treated as confirmed operational functions of the WZ-X at this stage.

The aircraft remains a developmental system, and there is no public evidence establishing that it has entered operational service.

The bigger picture

The WZ-X is emerging as China continues to invest heavily in unmanned and low-observable aviation.

The country’s military has been developing a range of flying-wing and combat-drone concepts, from smaller stealth UAVs to very large aircraft designed for long-range operations.

The WZ-X stands out because of its enormous wingspan and apparent emphasis on endurance.

Its estimated 52–53-meter wingspan places it in a remarkable size category for an unmanned aircraft, while its unusual wing geometry suggests Chinese engineers are pursuing a design different from the more familiar flying-wing configurations associated with American stealth aircraft.

For now, however, many of the most intriguing questions remain unanswered.

China has not publicly confirmed the aircraft’s official name, manufacturer, exact specifications, intended operational role, range, payload or whether it will eventually carry weapons.

What the new photographs do establish is considerably more modest—but still significant: the mysterious giant aircraft appears to be real, its unusual wing design is becoming clearer, and evidence now indicates that the program has progressed into flight testing.

And if the WZ-X eventually becomes operational, its enormous size and apparent stealth characteristics could give China another potentially important tool for gathering intelligence across contested regions—without putting a pilot aboard.
