NANTERRE, France — After more than six years away from full-length concert performances, Céline Dion stepped back onto the stage Saturday night—and the emotional moment quickly became one of the most powerful comebacks in music.
The 58-year-old Canadian superstar returned before a massive crowd at the Plenitude Arena in Nanterre, outside Paris, opening her long-awaited residency with “On ne change pas.” Within moments, Dion became overwhelmed with emotion and briefly struggled to continue as tears filled her eyes.
But what happened later in the concert made the comeback even more remarkable.
Dion ultimately completed a roughly two-hour-and-15-minute show featuring 25 songs, including some of the biggest hits of her career. And when she reached “All By Myself” during the encore, she delivered the climactic vocal moment that had fans on their feet. The performance was particularly poignant because the singer’s voice and ability to perform had been seriously affected by stiff-person syndrome (SPS), the rare neurological disorder she publicly revealed in 2022.
“I made a promise to be back on stage,” Dion told the audience, describing the return as an opportunity to sing for both herself and her fans.
Reuters reported that Dion openly acknowledged how difficult the road back had been, telling the crowd that the journey had been rocky and longer than expected. She became tearful during the opening number and at one point allowed the audience to help carry the song.
A comeback years in the making
Dion’s return is significant because she had not performed a full concert since March 2020.
Her career was subsequently disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic and, more seriously, by her diagnosis of stiff-person syndrome. The rare and progressive neurological condition can cause severe muscle stiffness and painful spasms, including symptoms affecting the muscles involved in singing and movement.
Dion eventually canceled her world-tour plans as she focused on managing the illness.
Her struggle was documented in the 2024 film “I Am: Céline Dion,” which gave fans an unusually intimate look at the physical challenges she faced while trying to regain control of her voice and body.
Yet the singer repeatedly maintained that she wanted to perform again.
And on Saturday night, she finally did.

Reviews of the comeback noted that Dion made adjustments to some of her famous songs, including lowering the keys of several demanding numbers.
The changes, however, did not erase the vocal power that made her one of the world’s most celebrated singers.
The Guardian described the performance as a triumphant and deeply emotional return, noting that Dion’s voice still possessed considerable power while also revealing some of the effects of her health battle. The review highlighted performances including “Tout l’or des hommes,” “Beauty and the Beast,” “Pour que tu m’aimes encore” and the operatic “Ebben? Ne andrò lontana.”
Rolling Stone likewise characterized the comeback as an emotional celebration of Dion’s voice, stage presence and extraordinary relationship with her audience.
Perhaps the most symbolic moment came with “All By Myself.”
When Dion reached the song’s climactic passage, the audience erupted. After successfully delivering the demanding vocal moment, she appeared to look toward her musical director with a mixture of relief and disbelief—a reaction that made the achievement even more powerful for those watching.
For a singer whose illness had threatened her ability to perform at all, the moment became more than another concert finale.

Paris had been waiting for her
The excitement surrounding Dion’s return had already transformed Paris into something of a celebration of her music.
Thousands of fans gathered around the city ahead of the comeback, while large-scale karaoke events allowed people without tickets to sing along to her biggest songs.
ABC News reported that Paris hosted a giant karaoke celebration ahead of the concert, while fans traveled from different parts of the world hoping to experience Dion’s return.
The Guardian reported that the demand for tickets was extraordinary, with millions of people registering for the presale lottery. The city also embraced “Célinemania,” with tributes, merchandise and public celebrations appearing throughout Paris.
The comeback had also generated enormous anticipation among Dion’s international fan base, many of whom feared they might never see her perform a full concert again.
The road ahead
Dion’s return is not intended to be a one-night event.
Her Paris engagement forms part of a series of concerts scheduled across September and October, with additional performances planned for 2027. Reuters reported that the initial Paris run comprises 16 shows, with another 10 concerts planned for May 2027.
The singer had previously announced the Paris comeback as a limited engagement, describing the opportunity to perform again as one of the greatest gifts she could receive.
Before the concert, Dion had also emphasized that she was taking care of her health while preparing for the demanding schedule.
Her return therefore carries an important caveat: this is not a story about illness suddenly disappearing. Stiff-person syndrome has no known cure, and Dion’s comeback reflects her ongoing effort to manage the condition while returning to the work she loves.
But for the thousands inside the arena—and millions of fans watching from around the world—the message from Saturday night was unmistakable.
Céline Dion is back.
She may have had to change the way she sings some of the songs that made her famous. She may have had to overcome challenges that once seemed impossible.
But when the music started, the audience sang with her.
And when she reached that final note of “All By Myself,” the roar from the crowd said everything.
After six years of waiting, Céline Dion had finally returned to the stage.
