Cebu City police are asking the Land Transportation Office to revoke and cancel the driver’s licenses of motorists involved in a viral road rage incident in Barangay Malubog, even after the parties reached an amicable settlement at the barangay level.
The Cebu City Police Office said its investigation is continuing because the incident may have criminal implications despite the settlement between those involved. Police are also coordinating with the LTO regarding the requested license action.
Police Lieutenant Colonel Gerard Ace Pelare, CCPO deputy city director for operations, said the confrontation reportedly began with a traffic misunderstanding between the motorists. Initial findings indicated that the parties engaged in brake-checking, which nearly resulted in a collision before the confrontation escalated.
Police said the incident involved a group of motorcycle riders, with several members allegedly joining in the assault of one of their companions. Officers later visited the victim at his home while he was recovering from his injuries.
The incident occurred on Sept. 20 in Sitio Pung-ol, Barangay Malubog. The victim reportedly said he was traveling home from work when he overtook a group of motorcycle riders heading toward the Transcentral Highway. A motorcycle subsequently struck his vehicle from behind, causing him to fall. He later alleged that a rider confronted and punched him.
The police request for license revocation comes as authorities in Cebu continue taking administrative and legal action in response to road rage incidents. In a separate Sept. 20 confrontation along Escario Street, the LTO was also asked to issue show-cause orders against the drivers involved after a viral video showed a roadside altercation.
Authorities emphasized that an amicable settlement between parties does not necessarily end a police investigation when potential violations of the law are involved. The CCPO said it will continue examining the Malubog incident and coordinating with the LTO on the appropriate administrative process.
The case underscores the consequences that can follow when traffic disputes escalate into physical confrontations. Police are urging motorists to remain calm on the road and avoid taking matters into their own hands as the investigation continues.
