ZAMBOANGA CITY — The Zamboanga City government has assured support for students, school personnel, families and others affected by the deadly shooting at the Ateneo de Zamboanga University Junior High School campus, as authorities intensify their investigation into the attack.
The city government expressed its condolences following the August 18 shooting and said it was coordinating closely with school officials, the Zamboanga City Police Office and other authorities to respond to the incident.
Officials also urged the public to remain calm and vigilant and warned against spreading unverified information, rumors, photographs or videos that could interfere with the investigation or cause additional distress to those affected.
Two students killed
Authorities and the school have confirmed that two people died in the incident, both students, including the alleged shooter.
According to reports, the shooting occurred Tuesday morning inside the Junior High School campus of Ateneo de Zamboanga University. The alleged shooter, also a junior high school student, reportedly opened fire inside the school before later dying from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to authorities cited by several news organizations.
Philstar.com reported that police received the shooting report at about 7:50 a.m. and immediately responded to the school. Investigators are also examining how firearms were brought onto the campus.
Reports on the number of injured have varied as authorities continued gathering information. Philstar cited local reports saying nine people were injured, while other initial accounts reported fewer injuries. Because the investigation was still developing, the number should be treated as subject to official confirmation.
School community placed under heightened concern
Ateneo de Zamboanga University confirmed the fatalities and said the safety of its students remained a priority. School officials also worked to account for students and contact parents and guardians following the shooting.
The university subsequently announced the cancellation of classes and a day of mourning and prayer on August 19 as the school community grapples with the deaths.
The Department of Education, meanwhile, said it was coordinating with mental-health partners to provide psychological first aid and psychosocial support to people affected by the incident. DepEd also appealed to the public and media not to circulate sensitive photographs, videos or unverified details involving the shooting, particularly because minors are involved.
Investigation shifts to school security and firearm access
Beyond the immediate response, investigators are now facing a critical question: How did a student manage to bring firearms into the school campus?
GMA News reported that the Bureau of Customs placed an official whose child was allegedly involved in the shooting under preventive suspension while authorities investigate possible accountability and whether his firearms were used in the incident.
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. also directed law-enforcement agencies to conduct a thorough investigation, emphasizing that schools should be among the safest places in the country.
The incident has consequently moved beyond a single school tragedy and into a wider discussion about school security, firearm access, parental responsibility, student welfare and the need for stronger prevention measures.
It is also the second fatal school shooting reported in the Philippines within a matter of months. Reuters noted that the Zamboanga incident followed a deadly school shooting in Tacloban in June that left three students dead and many others injured.
Zamboanga LGU calls for calm
For the Zamboanga City government, the immediate priority remains the safety and welfare of those directly affected.
The LGU said it is prepared to extend assistance and called for unity and vigilance while police and other authorities continue their work. It also emphasized that residents should rely on official statements from the city government, police, school authorities and other authorized agencies rather than unverified social-media posts.
As investigators piece together what happened inside the Ateneo campus, the questions surrounding firearm access, campus security and the circumstances that led to the shooting are likely to remain central to the probe.
For now, officials are urging the community to avoid speculation, protect the privacy of the affected families and allow authorities to establish the facts.
The tragedy has already left two families grieving. The next challenge is determining how a deadly attack was able to happen inside a school—and what must change to prevent another one.
